COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State led from start to finish on its way to scoring its second-highest total of the season with a 195.850 to win a quad meet on Saturday. The Buckeyes secured victories over Rutgers (194.800), West Chester (191.600) and UW-Whitewater (191.275) to improve to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten.
“We are definitely getting more confident as we go,” said head coach Meredith Paulicivic. “Tonight was loud and hectic, which was great practice for the Big Five Meet and Big Ten Championships. We had some mistakes here and there but I definitely saw some great things tonight. A win on the road is always good.”
For the second consecutive meet, Ohio State claimed event titles on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise while coming in second on balance beam. The Buckeyes also tallied a season-best 12 finishes on the podium, including five in first place.
The Scarlet & Gray kicked off the evening on the uneven bars with a 48.875. Kaitlyn Hofland won the event on a 9.825, followed by Amanda Huang and Alexis Mattern in second place at 9.800.
Jamie Stone led the way on balance beam and matched her career high thanks to a 9.825 to finish second. Morgan Lowe tied for third (9.800). As a team, the Buckeyes scored a 48.800.
Ohio State posted a 49.000 on floor exercise, the third time scoring 49.000 or better this season. Stone once again tallied the high mark for the team behind a 9.875 to win it. Brooke Chesney had a career-high 9.800 and tied for third with Mattern.
The Buckeyes finished the night on vault with a season-high 49.175. Lowe and Mattern each earned a 9.875 to share first place. The score was a new career mark for Lowe, her third straight meet with a career high on an apparatus. Olivia Aepli placed third with a 9.850.
Mattern was Ohio State’s lone gymnast in the all-around competition. She did not disappoint as she secured a first-place finish on a 39.150 for her first victory of the season.
The team returns to St. John Arena on Friday, Feb. 9 against Penn State at 6 p.m. ET.
