COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team (27-25) swept a doubleheader against UNC Greensboro (21-29) at Bill Davis Stadium on Saturday to extend its current win streak to five games.
Game 1: Ohio State 6, UNCG 1
Game Recap
- The Buckeyes struck first. In the bottom of the second inning, Matthew Graveline led off with an infield bunt single. Henry Kaczmar stepped up to the plate next and doubled to center field, scoring Graveline to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead. Mitchell Okuley reached base on a fielder’s choice, Kaczmar scored and Ohio State went into the third inning ahead, 2-0.
- An RBI double from the Spartans in the top of the third cut the Ohio State lead in half, 2-1.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Cole Andrews led off with a solo homerun, blasting the first pitch he saw out of the park to put the Buckeyes back up by two, 3-1.
- Graveline singled up the middle to lead off the home half of the eighth inning. Kaczmar then went yard, sailing one over the fence in right field to extend the OSU lead, 5-1. Okuley also homered in the eighth to put the Buckeyes ahead by five, 6-1.
- The Spartans loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but Jake Johnson worked out of the jam to secure the 6-1 Buckeye victory.
Buckeyes by the Numbers
- Graveline and Kaczmar led the Buckeyes in hits with two apiece.
- Kaczmar had a team-high three RBIs and Okuley batted in two runs.
- Gavin Bruni (4-3) earned the win on the mound with a phenomenal performance. Bruni fanned seven and allowed one run on five hits in 6.0 innings pitched.
- Johnson earned the save. He struck out one and gave up two hits in 1.0 inning tossed.
Game 2: Ohio State 5, UNCG 1 (7 innings)
Game Recap
- The Buckeyes once again got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead after a solo homerun from Okuley in the bottom of the second inning.
- UNCG tied things up, 1-1, after an RBI double in the top of the third frame.
- The score remained tied until the bottom of the fifth. Nick Erwin singled to left field with one out on the board. Hank Thomas was next up and he sent one out of the park, sending two runs across to put Ohio State ahead by two, 3-1.
- RBI singles from Graveline and Erwin in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Buckeyes a 5-1 lead.
- The Spartans went down in order in the seventh inning and the Buckeyes earned the DH sweep.
Buckeyes by the Numbers
- Okuley leads the Buckeyes with eight homeruns on the season.
- Erwin and Trey Lipsey led Ohio State with two hits each.
- Thomas had a team-high two RBIs.
- Jonah Jenkins (5-4) was the winning pitcher. He fanned four and gave up one run on five hits in 6.0 innings pitched.
