PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team split a pair of matches to close the Champyinz Invitational at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday. The Buckeyes (3-3) picked up a 3-0 win (25-9, 25-23, 25-19) over Duquesne (2-3) before they came up short to Green Bay (6-1) in four sets (13-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-20) during the nightcap.
In her first start of the season, rookie Gabby Gonzales dominated Duquesne with a career-high 20 kills while hitting .439. She also had five digs and two service aces. Lauren Witte joined her in double figures with 10 kills on 15 swings for a .533 clip.
Mac Podraza and Becca Mauer split the setting duties with 17 and 16 assists, respectively. Kylie Murr dug 15 balls, followed by Camryn Moeller (6) and Bia Franklin (5). Jordan Fry, Witte and Mauer tallied three blocks apiece and Podraza had two.
The Buckeyes held the Dukes to a .121 hitting percentage as no player had more than nine kills.
Against Green Bay, 12 of the 15 Buckeyes that saw action recorded a kill, led by Mia Grunze with eight. Podraza, the starting setter, had a career-high five kills and paired it with 23 assists and four digs. Murr chipped in 29 digs while Moeller finished with 11. Fry had three blocks at the net.
Ohio State continues its road swing at the Holiday Inn-University Plaza Invitational Sept. 13-14. The Buckeyes will face Western Kentucky, Tulane and Bowling Green.
