COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team opened its 2014-15 campaign with a 2-2 overtime draw with Western Ontario in an exhibition matchup at the OSU Ice Rink Sunday afternoon. Junior Kendall Curtis found the back of the net, fueling the Buckeyes toward victory in the shootout, 1-0 in three rounds.
Ohio State begins the regular season next weekend, Oct. 3-4, with a home series against New Hampshire. The teams will meet Friday at 6:07 p.m. and return the ice Saturday at 2:07 p.m., both games will be held at the OSU Ice Rink.
The Buckeyes got off to a strong start offensively vs. the Mustangs, tallying two goals in the first period alone. Katie Matheny, a sophomore this season, opened the scoring at 3:55, with assists credited to Claudia Kepler and Melani Moylan. Western, however, had an answer for the Buckeye attack, tying the game 1-1 at 12:20. Shorthanded to end the first, Ohio State’s penalty kill unit converted off a strike from junior Julia McKinnon. Kepler assisted on the play, bringing her total to two for the match.
The Mustangs once again leveled the score, 2-2, on a power play opportunity at the 5:17 mark in the second. In the third period of play, the teams were scoreless. The Buckeyes outshot the Mustangs in the stanza, 17-5.
Moving on to overtime, the teams combined for six shots on goal, with Ohio State holding a 4-2 advantage.
For the game, Ohio State outshot Western 46-21. The Buckeyes played all three goalies with freshman Kassidy Sauve earning 7 saves in her first start. Freshman Alex LaMere took over reigns in the second, with five saves to her credit, while veteran Stacy Danczak combined for seven stops in the third period and overtime.
