COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State rifle team and head coach Ryan Tanoue announced Tuesday the signings of three future Buckeyes to NCAA National Letters of Intent. Joshua Black, Drew Cheezum and Mark Matheny have all committed to come to Ohio State and will join the rifle squad Fall 2014.
“I am extremely excited about our 2014 class,” Tanoue said in a statement. “The three gentlemen we have coming in bring a wealth of experience as well as very high-level competition backgrounds. They have all competed at and won high-level national competitions and will aim to immediately help our team reach our goals for next season and the seasons to come. They are also all extremely motivated to earn challenging degrees while they are students at Ohio State which will be a welcome challenge throughout their careers.”
Joshua Black – Richmond, Virginia
High School: Home schooled. Dual enrolled at J Sargeant Reynolds Community College (Dean’s List).
Experience: American Legion Post 233, Varina, VA Shooting Accomplishments: 2012 and 2013 VA State Small-bore Champion; 2011 and 2013 VA State Air Rifle Champion; Fourth place National Finalist, The 22nd American Legion Junior Shooting Sports National Championship (2012); Olympic Trials Competitor; 4-time Junior Olympic competitor; National Junior Olympic 3-position Sporter J2 and J3 Air Rifle Champion; NRA and CMP Distinguished Expert.
Intended major: Biology
“I’m looking forward to traveling and competing with the rifle team and improving my shooting skills,” Black said. “I am excited to meet new people from all over the world, and learn as much as I can from being at school. Go bucks!”
Drew Cheezum – Centreville, Md.
High School: Queen Anne’s County High School
Experience: Queen Anne’s county 4-H club; USAS National Champion in air rifle J2, hold 6 NRA national records, and 5 time competitor at Junior Olympics.
Intended major: Biomedical Engineering
“I am really looking forward to joining the rifle team and also going to the football games,” Cheezum said.
Mark Matheny – Middletown, DE
High School: Homeschool
Experience: Queen Anne’s 4H Marksmen Club; Winchester/NRA small bore Distinguished Expert; holds 12 NRA smallbore team and individual national shooting records; 2013 Jr Olympic J2 Gold Medalist, Air Rifle; 2013 NRA Jr. Sectional 3P Rifle National Championship team member; 2013 NRA Jr. Sectional Precision air rifle National Championship team member; 2013 Maryland state indoor Metric Smallbore open champion; 2013 Maryland state indoor Precision Air Rifle open champion; 2013 NRA Metric Nationals bronze medalist; National Matches Air Rifle Championship 60 Shot High Junior; 2013 National SB 3P Metallic Sight; High Civilian, at Camp Perry; NRA National Matches Outdoor Rifle and Pistol Championship 2nd Intermediate Junior; 2013 USAS National Championships second place male 3P J2; five NRA master classifications; 2013 & 2014 Jr Olympic air and smallbore rifle competitor; began competitive shooting at age 16.
