COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team defeated St. Cloud State, 3-0, Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink to split the weekend series between the teams. Ohio State, coming off a bye-week from competition, improves to 5-3 on the year (3-3 WCHA). The Huskies are 3-3-1 overall this season and 2-1-1 in the WCHA.
No goals were scored in the opening period of play, as both squads came out with a defensive mindset. Buckeye goalie Kassidy Sauve earned a save on all four shot attempts by the Huskies, while Ohio State countered with 10 shots on the offensive end. The game marked the eighth collegiate start for Sauve, a freshman this season.
In the second, another Buckeye rookie had an impact when freshman Lauren Spring scored her first collegiate goal. Spring, posted in front of the net, guided in a strike from teammate Kari Schmitt. Senior Kayla Sullivan also assisted on the play, which was her third helper this season. Saint Cloud outshot Ohio State 9-7 for the period; however, the Buckeyes went into the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
Senior Sara Schmitt added to Ohio State’s point total in the third, with two goals credited. The Buckeye captain scored her first off a feed from Taylor Kuehl and Kari Schmitt at 15:51. At the time of the goal, the clock was winding down on a 5-3 power play for the Scarlet and Gray. With the score 2-0 in the final minutes of play, the Huskies pulled their goalie Katie Fitzgerald, opening the net for Sara Schmitt to tally the Buckeyes’ third of the game.
After being outshot early, the Buckeyes ended the game ahead in shots, 28-18. Sauve earned 18 saves in 60 minutes between the pipes. Fitzgerald was credited with 25 stops for Saint Cloud.
On special teams, the Buckeye power play converted once on four opportunities. Ohio State did not allow a goal on four of Saint Cloud’s chances.
Next up, Ohio State will hit the road for a series with Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn. Games are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8.
