Main Draw Singles
Peter Kobelt is the Buckeyes’ lone entry in the main draw singles portion of the tournament. The top ranked Buckeye, the redshirt junior is the 35th best tennis player in the country. Making it out of the first round would be an improvement upon his first round exit from the tournament at the hands of Nebraska’s Benedikt Lindheim by a score of 7-5, 6-2, last year.
Second year Buckeye, senior Connor Smith will compete in the qualifying singles. Last year Smith lost in the qualifying finals 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to Mousheg Hovhannisyan of Pepperdine.
Main Draw Doubles
Peter Kobelt and Connor Smith, the best singles competitors for Ohio State in the 2012 ITA Men’s All-American Championships, will team up and compete as a main draw doubles tandem. The duo competed together last year and faced Yale’s Daniel Hoffman and Marc Powers and lost 8-2.
For the qualifying doubles, Ohio State will boast redshirt sophomore Hunter Callahan and redshirt freshman Chris Diaz. Callahan teamed up with Nelson Vick in the tournament last year, but fell to David Cavalcantl and Matheus Pereira of Wichita State, 8-6. This year Callahan is partnered with Diaz in what will be the first action Diaz has seen for the Scarlet and Gray.
Four Buckeyes in Prequalifying Singles
Hunter Callahan also will compete in the prequalifying singles for Ohio State along with Chris Diaz, Kevin Metka, a redshirt sophomore from Worthington, Ohio, and Constantin Christ, a freshman from Eppstein, Germany. For Christ, it will be his first time representing Ohio State in ITA play.
2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I Preseason Rankings
The Buckeyes will turn to the highest ranked members of the team, Peter Kobelt (35) and Connor Smith (60), to bring Ohio State a singles or doubles championship for a consecutive year.
McCarthy and Van Engelen are the fifth-ranked doubles team in the nation, while Kobelt and Smith are No. 44. During the 2011-12 season McCarthy and Van Engelen compiled a 33-10 record and went 9-2 in Big Ten play, but they will not be competing in the tournament. Kobelt and Smith won 29 matches a season ago with only five losses, posting an undefeated 10-0 record in the Big Ten.
