Buckeyes Secure Seventh Straight Win with 12-8 Victory Over Dayton

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team continued its hot streak on Sunday, defeating Dayton (4-13), 12-8, to win its seventh straight game and improve to 11-6 on the season.

Game Recap

  • The Flyers got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead over the Buckeyes in the top of the first inning after an RBI double.
  • An RBI single and a home plate steal extended Dayton’s lead, 3-0, in the away half of the fourth inning.
  • The Buckeyes, however, answered in the bottom of the fourth frame. Matthew Graveline led off with a single to center field. A one-out single from Nick Erwin puts two runners on base and Josh McAlister was walked to load the bases. Trey Lipsey stepped up to the plate and came up big with a bases-clearing double to right field to tie the score, 3-3. An RBI triple from Kade Kern gave Ohio State its first lead of the game.

  • Dayton quickly tied the score, 4-4, with a solo homerun in the top of the fifth inning and reclaimed the lead, 6-4, with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Trey Lipsey singled to get on base and Kern was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Marcus Ernst went yard, blasting a homerun over the right field fence to send three runs across and put Ohio State back ahead of the Flyers, 7-6.

  • With one out on the board in the home half of the seventh, Erwin singled to left field. Henry Kaczmar was then walked to put two runners on. Josh McAlister singled to score Erwin and put the Buckeyes up by two, 8-6. Lipsey came in clutch once again, knocking his first homerun of the season out of the park to give Ohio State a five-run lead, 11-6. A triple from Cole Andrews plated another run for OSU and gave the Buckeyes a 12-6 advantage.

  • An RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Dayton in the top of the ninth added two more runs, but the Buckeyes turned a double play to end the game and secure the 12-8 victory.

Buckeyes by the Numbers

  • Ernst’s homerun was his fifth of the season, which is a team-high.
  • The Buckeyes recorded 15 total hits. Lipsey, Kern and Erwin each recorded a team-best three hits and Mitchell Okuley added two hits.
  • Lipsey led the team in RBIs with six, which is his career-high. Ernst batted in three runs.
  • Lipsey scored a team-high three runs.
  • Justin Eckhardt started on the mound. He struck out three and gave up four runs on seven hits in a 4.1-inning no-decision.
  • Jonah Jenkins (3-0) earned the win. He struck out one and allowed one run on three hits in 2.0 innings pitched.
