DUBLIN, Ohio – Playing in the first event of its kind, the Ohio State men’s and women’s golf teams are second with 7.5 points after the first day of the Barbara Nicklaus Cup at Muirfield Village Golf Club. Florida State leads with 13.5 points ahead of Ohio State, Arizona State (7.5) and Auburn (3.5).
Combined teams from FSU, ASU, Auburn and Ohio State are competing in mixed foursomes and singles matches. Each team will play three matches with eight points at stake in each match, one each in four mixed doubles and singles matches.
In the afternoon vs. Florida State, the Buckeyes battled the Seminoles in several close matches before falling 6 ½-1 ½.
The Ohio State team of JonErik Alford and Jillian Bourdage earned a tie in a mixed foursome match with a birdie on their last hole. In singles, Maxwell Moldovan won his singles match 2&1 to end the day for the Buckeyes.
In the other afternoon session, Arizona State defeated Auburn 5 ½-2 ½.
In the morning session, Ohio State defeated Arizona State 6-2. The Buckeyes won three-of-four mixed foursome matchers and three-of-four of the singles matches.
The Ohio State duo of Jackson Chandler and Kristin Jamieson won their match 5&4 to lead the way. JonErik Alford and Lauren Peter won 2&1 while Adam Wallin and Kailie Vongsaga won 2up to set the table for the singles matches.
In the men’s singles, Ohio State’s Patrick Schmucking did not lose a hole in his 6&5 win while teammate Maxwell Moldovan claimed a 4&3 victory.
Aneka Seumanutafa closed out the scoring for the Buckeyes with a 1up victory in her singles match.
In the other morning session, Florida State defeated Auburn 7-1.
Ohio State closes out the inaugural Barbara Nicklaus Cup Tuesday against Auburn. Florida State will battle Arizona State. Tee times begin at 8 a.m.
