Buckeyes Run-Rule No. 14 TTUN in Regular Season Finale

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – It was a great day to be a Buckeye as Ohio State handed Michigan its first run-rule loss at home since 2000 on Sunday night with a 10-1 victory at the Wilpon Complex to wrap up the regular season. The win lifts the Buckeyes to 34-13 on the campaign and 14-8 in the Big Ten while the Wolverines drop to 43-10 overall and 18-3 in conference play.

  • The Buckeyes were quick to get on the board with a three-spot in the opening frame. It began with Lilli Piper’s 19th home run, which tied the program’s single-season record. Up next, Emily Clarkdrew a walk and Niki Carver singled to second base for runners on the corners. Ashley Goodwindelivered a two-RBI single through the right side to extend the gap.
  • The Wolverines recorded a run in the bottom of the first on a RBI single from Madison Uden.
  • It was an even better half in the second for Ohio State with four runs on three hits and an error. Back-to-back singles by Becca Gavin and Taylor White got the offense going. A fielder’s choice allowed Bailee Sturgeon to get on base and Gavin went to third. While Piper was up to bat, Sturgeon stole second and a throwing error by the catcher gave Gavin time to sprint home. With first base open, the Wolverines decided to intentionally walk Piper. Shelby McCombs stepped up and demolished a three-run homer down the left field line.
  • Ohio State added three more runs in the third. Kallie Boren doubled to right field and Gavin singled to the pitcher to cover the corners. White looped a RBI double to right center to open up the lead. On the following at-bat, Sturgeon reached on a fielding error by the pitcher to load the bases. The Buckeyes sent a pair across the plate on a fielding error by the shortstop for a nine-run advantage.
  • RHP Shelby McCombs did not give up an extra-base hit on her way to win No. 16. She fanned six batters, allowed four hits and one run over five innings. McCombs also had the game-ending strikeout with two runners on.

  • For the second straight year, the Buckeyes took the series finale from the Wolverines.
  • Ohio State forced Michigan to commit a season-high four errors.
  • The Buckeyes’ defense put in work as TTUN left nine runners on base.
  • Lilli Piper tied Ohio State’s single-season record with her 19th home run.
  • Shelby McCombs had her 13th home run of the season.
  • Becca Gavin was 2-for-2 with two runs.
  • Taylor White had two hits, one run and a RBI.
  • Through 47 games, Ohio State has connected on 62 home runs. The Buckeyes have recorded at least one home run in 35 outings.
