COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State fencing program hosted dual matches Saturday in French Field House, with the men posting a 6-0 record on the day and the women finishing 5-2. The Buckeye men topped Incarnate Word and Cleveland State, while the women posted victories vs. the Cardinals, Vikings and Denison and fell to Northwestern.
The men are 14-3 on the year and the women are now 15-7 this season.
Four women posted double-digit victories Saturday – Camilla Rivano (15/foil), Grace Seal (14/foil), Steph Miller (11/sabre) and Montserrat Viveros (10/epee). Six men shared the team lead with five wins each – Shanvanth Arnipalli (sabre), Matthew Comes (epee), Vincent Haney (sabre), Matthew Hayes (sabre), Henry Lange (epee) and Jadon Montgomery (sabre).
The Buckeye Men
The men posted four wins against Cleveland State and two against Incarnate Word in the morning.
The Buckeyes defeated Incarnate Word 24-3 in the first dual of the day and finished with a 26-1 victory. The Cardinals forfeited sabre and foil, with Ohio State claiming epee 6-3 in the first dual and 8-1 in the second.
Against Cleveland State, the teams fenced two full duals, with Ohio State prevailing 20-7 and 21-6. The squads then faced off just in sabre, captured by the Buckeyes 5-4 and 7-2.
Matthew Hayes (5-1), Vincent Haney (5-1), Shanvanth Arnipalli (5-2) and Jadon Montgomery (5-4) all had five wins in sabre for the Buckeyes, with Stephen Chou and Benjamin Levitt both 3-0 and Jack Price 2-0. In foil, Diego Cervantes (2-0) and Nathan Wriedt (2-2) each had two victories and James Flanagan and Edriss Ndiaye each contributed a win. Matthew Comes (5-0) and Henry Lange (5-1) were first for epee with five victories apiece and Clark Kokenge and Max Rodney each had two victories.
The Buckeye Women
The Buckeye women posted two wins over both Incarnate Word and Cleveland State and topped Denison, while falling to Northwestern twice.
Ohio State beat Incarnate Word, which did not have a full squad, 26-1 and 27-0, winning sabre 8-1 in the first match and foil 9-0 in the second. Against Cleveland State, the Buckeyes prevailed 22-5 twice and Ohio State beat Denison 26-1. Northwestern captured 18-9 and 16-11 wins over Ohio State.
The women’s sabre squad was led by Steph Miller who was 11-3, while Zoë Shay-Tannas was 7-3. Evie Bustamante (4-0) and Nicole Fisher (4-5) each had four wins, Ariel Gluck (3-0) had three and Eva Shaffer contributed a win. In foil Camilla Rivano was 15-1, with Grace Seal 14-2; Emma Montgomery had four wins on the day. Montserrat Viveros posted 10 wins (10-2) to lead epee, with Alexanne Verret 8-1 and Jessica Thow 7-4.
