COLUMBUS, Ohio –The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (20-9 overall, 8-8 Big Ten) overcame a 2-1 match lead by Wisconsin (15-12, 4-12) to win 3-2 (20-25, 25-22, 26-28, 25-22, 19-16) over the Badgers Sunday afternoon in St. John Arena. Ohio State’s Katie Dull posted a match-high 29.5 points in the victory with a match-high 24 kills (.250), one ace serve, one solo block and seven assist blocks. Wisconsin’s Alexis Mitchell recorded a team-high 22 points with 21 kills (.500) and two assist blocks.

Set one saw seven ties and one lead change. OSU took an early 3-1 lead with kills from Anna Szerszen and Dull and a Badger error. At 11-10, kills from Reshel Bailey and Mitchell tied the set at 11. The last tie came at 16-all when two Bailey Reshel kills opened an 18-16 Wisconsin lead. Leading, 20-18, kills from Reshel and Julie Mikaelsen and two OSU errors gave the Badgers set point at 24-18. A kill from Emily Danks and a Kelli Barhorst-Dull block stopped two set points at 24-20. Wisconsin won the set with an Allison Wack kill to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Badgers hit .344 in the set to .171 for Ohio State.

A Wack kill opened set two. An Allie Schwarzwalder kill and an OSU error made it 2-1, Wisconsin. A Badger error tied the set at two and an ace serve from Danks made it 3-2 Ohio State. Wisconsin tied the set at three with an Elle Ohlander-Janelle Gabrielsen block. At seven-all, a Badger error, a Dull-Schwarzwalder block, a Davionna DiSalvatore ace serve and a Danks-Schwarzwalder block opened an 11-7 Buckeye lead. OSU held the lead and reached set point on a Wisconsin error at 24-22. A kill from Dull won the set at 25-22, to tie the match at one set each. Ohio State hit .086 for the set to .095 for Wisconsin.

The Buckeyes, with a Schwarzwalder kill and a Badger error opened set three at 2-0. A Mitchell kill and an Annemarie Hickey ace serve tied the set at two. At six-all, two Szerszen kills and two Danks-Schwarzwalder blocks gave Ohio State a 10-6 lead. Ohio State held the lead and at 22-20 when a kill from Wack and an OSU error tied the set at 22. Kills from Dull and Hickey made it 23-23. Errors by both teams made it 24-all. A Wack kill and a Badger error moved the score to 25-all. Kills from Dominique Thompson and Szerszen made it 26-all. An Elise Walch kill and a Buckeye error gave Wisconsin a 28-26 win in the set and a 2-1 lead in the match. The Badgers hit .194 for the set to .184 for Ohio State.

Tied at five in the fourth set, a kill from Dull, a Barhorst-Dull block and an ace serve from Dull gave Ohio State an 8-5 lead. At 16-14, a kill from Mitchell and an OSU error tied the set at 16. At 19-all, a Wack solo block gave Wisconsin a 20-19 lead. Amanda Peterson, with a kill, tied the set at 20. A Thompson kill and a Badger error made it 21-all. Ohio State took a 22-21 lead with a kill from Dull. A Wisconsin error and a Mariah Booth-Dull block gave the Buckeyes set point at 24-21. A Janelle Gabrielsen kill stopped the point at 24-22. Ohio State won the set at 25-22, with a kill from Dull to tie the match at two sets each. OSU hit .267 for the set to .133 for Wisconsin.

The fifth set contained 10 ties and six lead changes. After an early 2-0 Buckeye lead off a Dull kill and a Danks-Dull block, two kills from Mitchell tied the set at two. After a number of ties to reach seven-all, kills from Szerszen and Dull gave Ohio State a 9-7 lead. At 11-9, a Mikaelsen kill cut the OSU lead to one at 11-10. A kill from Danks and a Badger error made it 13-10. The Buckeyes reached match point at 14-10 with a Barhorst-Dull block. OSU failed on four match points off an OSU error, a Wack solo block, a Mikaelsen kill and a Mikaelsen-Thompson block to tie the set at 14. A Badger error gave OSU a fifth match point at 15-14. Thompson, with a kill tied the set at 15. A Buckeye error made it 16-15, Wisconsin to give them match point. A Szerszen kill stopped the point to tie the set at 16. An error by Wack made it 17-16 OSU for their sixth match point. Wack responded with a kill to tie the set at 17. Ohio State earned a seventh match point at 18-17 with a Peterson-Booth block. The Buckeyes closed out the set at 19-17 with a kill from Danks to win the match, 3-2. Ohio State hit .276 for the set to .152 for Wisconsin.

For the match, the Buckeyes hit .192 to .179 for Wisconsin. The Badgers had a 66-64 edge in kills while OSU had a 64-61 margin in assists. Wisconsin’s Gabrielsen posted a match-high 55 assists with OSU’s Betsy Hone recording 53. The Badgers had a 7-5 edge in ace serves with Hickey posting a match-high four. Wisconsin had eight service errors to seven for OSU. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 67-63 advantage in digs. Sharing match-high honors were Wisconsin’s Kim Kuzma and OSU’s Sarah Mignin with 23 each. At the net, Ohio State produced an 18 to 10.5 margin in team blocks. Buckeyes Danks and Dull shared match-high honors with eight blocks each. Danks recorded eight assist blocks while Dull posted a solo and seven assists.

Ohio State returns to the road for a 7 p.m. Wednesday match at eighth-ranked Penn State (23-4, 13-3) and return home to host 24th-ranked Northwestern (18-9, 8-8) at 7 p.m. Saturday in St. John Arena.
