Buckeyes Qualify For A/B Semifinals at NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – All three Buckeye boats will advance to Saturday’s A/B semifinals of the 2019 NCAA Championships after the first day of racing. The First Varsity Four, the highest seeded Ohio State crew, finished first in its heat while the First Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight finished second in their respective heats.

Due to weather conditions in Indianapolis last night causing debris on the course, the start of the championships was postponed until the afternoon, with racing beginning at 4:00 p.m.

The 1V8 completed a strong performance in the team’s first outing of the day. The boat, comprised of Anjali Fernandes, Leonie Heuer, Ida Petersen, Lexie Nothdurft, Ida Kruse, Jessy Vermeer, Alessandra Montesano, Sierra Tiede and Grace Libben, finished second in its heat. The Buckeyes and California were neck-in-neck in the last 500m of the course, with Ohio State finishing with a time of 6:09.045, less than 0.4 seconds behind first-place California.

Next up was the 2V8 of Sophie Blair, Mane Bravo Alvez, Sierra Cydrus, Meg Cymanski, Rachel DeWitte, Michaela Nordhaus, Maddie Perrett, Michayla Binkley and Claire Cannon. The boat made its way up to second-place after passing Rutgers and Yale during to race to finish with a time of 6:28.934.

Closing out the day was the 1V4, taking first in its heat with a time of 7:05.275, 1.5 seconds ahead of second-place Michigan. The boat, manned by Divya Batchu, Kendell Massier, Julia Miklasevich, Ally Hatton, Maddie Frendberg led for the majority of the race to secure its place in Saturday’s A/B semifinal.

Tomorrow’s races are scheduled to start at 8:12 a.m. The 1V8 A/B semifinal is set for 8:48 a.m. and the 2V8 A/B semifinal at 9:24 a.m. The 1V4’s will race in the A/B semifinal at 10:24 a.m. The top-3 of each heat will advance to Sunday’s grand final (places 1-6) and the remainder will race in the petite final (places 7-12).
