COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 64th-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team improved to 5-2 in Big Ten play with a 5-2 victory over Wisconsin Friday afternoon at home at the Stickney Tennis Center.
The Buckeyes (12-9, 5-2 Big Ten) downed the Badgers (11-10, 2-5 Big Ten) on the strength of five singles wins after Wisconsin took an early lead with two doubles victories.
The Wisconsin duo of Hannah Berner and Jessica Seyferth struck first, taking its match against Noelle Malley and Kara Cecil on court two, 8-5. Fidan Manashirova and Gabby Steele responded with a win for the Buckeyes on court three against Aleksandra Markovic and Nicky Stracar, 9-7.
With the doubles point on the line, all attention came to court one’s match between Ohio State’s Kelsey Haviland and Cami Hubbs and Wisconsin’s tandem of Alaina Trgovich and Jenny Hois. Haviland and Hubbs jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the bout, but Trgovich and Hois climbed back and eventually took the match, 8-6, to give Wisconsin an early 1-0 lead.
Ohio State showed its resilience in singles, however, taking five matches in straight sets to notch the team win.
Manashirova continued her impressive 2011 campaign with her 23rd victory of the season, this time against Seyferth on court five, 6-0, 6-1. Doubles partner Steele followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Stracar on court three.
Haviland moved the Buckeyes one point closer to a win with her victory against Trgovich on court two, 6-2, 6-4, before Hubbs clinched the 12th Buckeye win of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Markovic on court six.
Wisconsin’s Hois provided the Badger’s second point with a 7-5, 6-1 victory on court one against Paloma Escobedo in the senior Buckeyes’ first match since March 11. The Houston, Texas, native missed the previous eight matches because of injury.
Cecil wrapped up the match moments before the rain fell on Columbus with a 7-4 tiebreaker win in the second set to defeat Berner on court four, 6-2, 7-6(4).
Ohio State hosts its final home match Sunday. The Buckeyes take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers at 11 a.m. at Stickney Tennis Center and will celebrate the careers of seniors Hubbs and Escobedo after the match.
