COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s tennis players Chase Buchanan, Blaz Rola and doubles participants Matt Allare and Peter Kobelt advanced to the next round of the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Thursday. Played at the famous USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, home to the U.S. Open, the tournament will resume Friday.

Rola definitely recorded one of the biggest wins of the day as he upset No. 2 seed Eric Quigley of Kentucky, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-2. Overall it was not a good first round for seeded players in general as the Buckeye was one of four unseeded participants to knock out his ranked counterpart.

Buchanan, who is seeded eighth, survived the opening round, but it took a comeback on the New Albany, Ohio, native’s part to not become one of the four seeded players going home as he delivered a 6-2, 7-5 loss to Tucker Vorster of Mississippi.

Outside a dominating 8-5 win by Allare and Kobelt over Nathaniel Gery and Kevin Kung (Columbia) in the doubles bracket, the two wins by Rola and Buchanan were definitely nail-biters.

For Rola, the victory over Quigley marks his seventh-consecutive win and it also demonstrated how the freshman from Ptuj, Slovenia, can compete with some of the best collegiate tennis players in the nation. Rola and Quigley traded games, on serve, throughout the first two sets, with tiebreakers being the eventual deciding factor. Although Rola dropped the first set, 7-6 (5), he rebounded nicely with a second-set 7-6 (4) victory of his own. In the third and deciding set, Rola came out firing, taking 3-0 and 4-1 leads, before eventually winning the match. Rola now boasts a 5-1 record against nationally ranked opponents and in his last 11 matches, owns a 10-1 record. Rola’s second-round match will be against Sebastian Fanselow of Pepperdine.

Buchanan was impressive in his opening set, winning 6-2 over Vorster. However, Vorster nearly rallied to even the sets up at one a piece when he took a 5-3 lead in the second set. It was then Buchanan answered with four-consecutive wins and pulled out a 7-5 victory for game, set, match. Up next for Buchanan is Jose Hernandez from North Carolina.

Continuing where they left off at the ITA regionals two weeks ago, Allare (Mason, Ohio) and Kobelt (New Albany, Ohio) won their seventh consecutive match as a tandem, beating Gery and Kung, 8-5. The Buckeye duo’s next opponent is the Texas A&M pair of Jeff Dadamo and Austin Krajicek.
