COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a battle against ranked teams throughout the day at the St. John’s Invitational Cup in Queens, N.Y., Saturday, the No. 7 Ohio State women’s fencing team finished 3-2, while the No. 5 men were 2-3 on the day.
The Buckeye women topped No. 2 Harvard (20-7), No. 8 Penn State (16-11) and No. 17 St. John’s (19-8), falling to No. 1 Columbia (19-8) and No. 4 Notre Dame (16-11). On the men’s side, the Buckeyes were winners against No. 4 Notre Dame (16-11) and No. 15 Penn State (15-12), dropping decisions to No. 1 Harvard (19-8), No. 3 Columbia (15-12) and No. 11t St. Johns (14-13).
Foil led the women with a 27-18 ledger, women’s epee was 24-21 and women’s sabre was 23-22. Dasha Myroniuk paced all women and the foil squad with 13 wins, while Claire Teresa Galavotti had 11 wins in foil. Julieta Toledo in sabre and Montserrat Viveros in epee each had 10 victories to rank first on their squads.
For the men, epee was 25-20 mark as a squad, with foil 22-23 and sabre 17-28. Epeeist Gabriel Feinberg was first for the men with 11 victories and Edriss Ndiaye had nine to lead foil. Aaron Buergenthal, Jack Price and Roscoe Swartz each had four wins rank first in sabre.
