COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State synchronized swimming team continued to impress as it swept all four routines at Richmond and William & Mary during this past weekend.
The Buckeyes now will prep for the annual North Regional Championships, which will be held during two days March 5-6 at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. North Regionals usually serve as a preview to the U.S. Collegiate National Championships, one of the most prestigious national synchronized swimming competitions in the country. The championships will take place in Buffalo, N.Y., March 16-19.
The Buckeyes opened the weekend at Richmond Feb. 12 and defeated the Spiders by 54 points (93-39). In its usual fashion, the Scarlet Team (Paige Ramsey, Lauren Robinson, Lauren Nicholson, Chelsea Aton, Deborah Shim, Alex Beckett, Michelle Theriault and Colleen Courtmanche) won first-place honors, followed by a second-place showing by Team Gray (Monica Finnigan, Raquel Aguado, Katie LaBounty, Julia Gaylard, Jenny Mann, Kayley Colville and Lara Tutton.)
Up next, Yuliya Maryanko performed her dazzling solo routine for the top spot. Maryanko then paired with Theriault to execute a first-place duet performance. Finally, the trio of Ramsey, Robinson and Nicholson were first as Theriault, Beckett and Java Nikbakht finished second.
The following afternoon, Ohio State traveled to Williamsburg, Va., from Richmond. Again Team Scarlet showcased its talent, scoring a 95.750 to clip its Gray Squad teammates, who scored a 92.333. William & Mary finished third with a score of 82.667.
The duet competition was dominated by Maryanko and Theriault. The tandem scored a 94.000, nearly 10 points more than the Tribe’s 84.333, scored by Becca and Kira Schall. Maryanko’s solo routine earned an identical score of 94.000, beating out Becca Schall’s 80.167.
In a reverse from the previous afternoon, Theriault, Beckett and Nikbakht won the trio with a mark of 91.667, edging teammates Ramsey, Robinson and Nicholson by .667 points. The Tribe scored an 83.333.
