COLUMBUS, Ohio — Led by two goals and three points from sophomore Zac Dalpe, the Ohio State men’s hockey team beat the U.S. National Under-18 Team, part of the National Team Development Program, 6-3, Friday (Jan. 15) in an exhibition game in Value City Arena. Matt Bartkowski, Hunter Bishop and Sergio Somma each had two assists in the game, with 13 players recording at least one point.

The Buckeyes outscored the U-18 Team 2-1 in all three periods. Albert and Dalpe put Ohio State ahead 2-0 in the first period and Dalpe and Severyn scored the first two goals of the second period to give the Buckeyes a 4-1 lead at the second intermission. Kyle Reed and Peter Boyd tallied for the Buckeyes in the third. Buckeye junior goalie Dustin Carlson had 33 stops in the victory.

John Albert, an alum of the NTDP, put the Buckeyes on the board at 14:41 with a power-play goal. U.S. goalie Jack Campbell made a stop on Matt Bartkowski but the puck went to Albert at the post and he swept it in. Bishop had the second assist on the goal. At 17:37 Zac Dalpe tallied on the rebound of a Somma shot. Devon Krogh, who kept the puck in the zone, had the second assist on the goal. The U.S. Under-18 Team tallied at 19:01, when Austin Czarnik scored. Shots were 13-7 in favor of the Buckeyes after the first. Ohio State had the only three power-play chances of the stanza, scoring once.

In the second period Ohio State outscored the U.S. National Under-18 Team 2-1 to carry a 4-2 lead into intermission. Dalpe had his second of the night at 8:22. Bishop fed him the puck and he beat the U-18 defender wide. His backhand trickled through five-hole. Corey Toy also assisted on the goal. At 13:37 C.J. Severyn, an NTDP alum, was stationed at the post and redirected a Shane Sims pass behind Campbell. Chris Reed had the other helper, as he got the puck across to Sims. At 16:09 Michael Vilardo redirected a Bill Arnold shot from the point as he was skating through the slot. Carlson had 14 saves in the stanza, as the U-18 Team outshot the Buckeyes, 15-9. The Buckeyes stopped the U-18 Team on three power-play chances and were scoreless on one chance.

Kyle Reed scored at 9:12 of the third period to extend the lead to 5-2. Bartkowski got the puck to Jeff McNeil in the neutral zone. He passed up to Reed to create a 2-on-1. Reed was alone in close on Campbell and scored on a backhand. At 11:03 a Somma shot deflected off Boyd and into the net, with Dalpe on the second assist. The final goal came from Justin Faulk on the power play at 16:50. Ohio State was outshot in the period, 14-6. The U-18 Team had the only power-play chance of the period.

Carlson had 33 saves in all 60 minutes, as the Under-18 Team outshot Ohio State, 36-28. Campbell made 22 stops for the Under-18 squad.

Each team was 1-for-4 on the power play in the game.

The result and statistics from the game are not included in Ohio State’s season totals.

The Buckeyes return to action next weekend with a two-game series at Michigan State. The teams will meet at 7:35 p.m. Friday in a game televised by Fox Sports Plus and will meet at 5:05 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 23) in a game televised live by the Big Ten Network.
