Buckeyes Playing in ITA Midwest Regional

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Four members of the Ohio State women’s tennis team headed to Champaign, Ill., for the ITA Midwest Regional over the weekend. By reaching the Round of 16, sophomore Madeline Atway clinched a spot in the ITA Super Regionals, which will be hosted by Ohio State Oct. 22-26.

Atway was a team-best 3-0 in singles on the weekend, with Lina Ali and Shelly Bereznyak both 2-1.

Day One

On the opening day, Shelly Bereznyak and Madeline Atway both had first-round byes and then won their opening match in straight sets. Bereznyak is the tournament’s No. 2 seed, with Atway No. 7.

Lina Ali was a first-round winner and then fell to No. 8 seed Julia Andreach of Notre Dame. Danie Schoenly dropped her opening match in three sets.

Day Two

Madeline Atway posted a win to reach the Round of 16 and advance to the ITA Midwest Super Regionals. Shelly Bereznyak dropped a three-set decision in her main draw match. Dani Schoenly picked up a consolation win but then fell in her next match, having to retire because of injury.

Day Three

Players picked up extra matches on the final day of the tournament, with the three Buckeyes in action all winning in singles. Madeline Atway closed out the weekend undefeated, as she came from behind to defeat Northwestern’s Hannah McColgan, while Lina Ali and Shelly Bereznyak won in straight sets.

Up Next

The Buckeyes will head to Ann Arbor, Mich., next weekend for the Michigan Invitational. Oct. 4, Irina Cantos Siemers will travel to Charleston, S.C., for the ITA All-American Championships.
