COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s soccer team finished off the 2015 preseason with a 1-1 draw against No. 19 Xavier Friday night at the Shindigz National Soccer Festival in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Buckeyes open up the regular season against Cal State Fullerton at 7:30 p.m. ET Aug. 28 at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in the nightcap of the opening day of the 2015 Wolstein Classic.

“In the first half, Xavier applied a lot of pressure and we didn’t respond very well,” head coach John Bluem said. “We challenged our guys at halftime and it was great experience to be behind in an exhibition match and see how the guys would respond. We created chances and Liam Doyle was able to convert on a penalty kick for us in the second half. We had two or three good chances late in the game to come away for a victory as well. If we can play more consistent for the entire 90 minutes, we will be a tough team to beat this year.”

A few notes from the exhibition vs. the Musketeers:

  •  Xavier’s Jalen Brown scored the first goal of the game in the 27th minute off a deflection.
  • The Buckeyes answered in the 78th minute when Liam Doyle scored on a penalty kick. Christian Soldat was fouled inside the box to set up the scoring opportunity.
  • Marcus McCrary had a header following the goal that was cleared off the line, while Kyle Culbertson had a sliding shot that just went wide of the net in the final moments of the exhibition. The Buckeyes also had several free kicks in the second half, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
  • Ohio State had strong minutes off the bench from Henry Chancy, Abdi Mohamed, Marcus McCrary and Kenny Cunningham.
