QUEENS, N.Y.– Ohio State finished the first competition of the weekend 2-8 against some of the top collegiate fencing teams in the nation. Leading the Buckeyes was the women’s squad, securing two wins for the Scarlet and Gray against Columbia and Penn State.
The team finished with a bout record of 115-149.
The women’s squad locked in their first win of the day against Columbia in the third round. The sabre unit, consisting of Aleksandra Kolmykova, Sarah Merza and Joanne Chen, defeated the Lions, 7-2. Both the foil and epee units were narrowly edged out by their opponents, but contributed a combined seven points to the squad’s total.
The women’s squad finished the day with a win for Ohio State. The foil unit defeated the Nittany Lions, 6-3. Both Camilla Rivano and Gabriella Cecchini went undefeated against their opponents. The epee unit also edged out Penn State, 5-4. Alexanne Verret won all three of her bouts, contributing three points the unit’s total. The women’s sabre unit won 4 bouts to add to the squad’s total.
The men’s epee squad ended with three unit victories for the day, defeating Notre Dame, Columbia and Harvard. Oliver Shindler had and impressive performance, going undefeated against the Fighting Irish. The sabre unit secured two victories for the Buckeyes against St. John’s and Penn State. Domenik Koch went undefeated in both rounds. The foil unit also recorded a victory over St. John’s, defeating the Red Storm, 5-4.
The Buckeyes are on their way to Philadelphia, Pa. to compete in the Philadelphia Invitational tomorrow, Jan. 20. The competition is set to start at 8:00 a.m. in the Tse Center.
