Buckeyes Open the Season at Erin Hills

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State will start the 2021-22 season this weekend in Wisconsin with the Marquette Intercollegiate at famed Erin Hills, site of the 2017 US Open. The 54-hole event runs Sunday through Tuesday. There is also an individual event running this weekend as well at nearby Washington County Golf Club. In all, a total of eight Buckeyes will be in action this opening weekend.

  • Ohio State’s lineup this week will consist of sophomore Maxwell Moldovan, junior Patrick Schmucking, seniors Grant Engle and JonErik Alford and freshman Jacob Tarkany, who is making his Buckeye debut.
  • The Buckeyes return three of its top four players in terms of scoring average from last season in Maxwell Moldovan, Jackson Chandler and Adam Wallin. All three players were named Big Ten Players to Watch this season.
  • Moldovan led the team with a 71.50 scoring average in eight events last season as a freshman. The Uniontown, Ohio native was named second team All-Big Ten and received PING All-Region honors.
  • Chandler averaged 73.14 last season and carries a 73.85 career average over 13 events as a Buckeye. All but two of his rounds last year counted towards the team score.
  • Wallin played in every event last year as a freshman and held a 73.17 stroke average. He finished under-par at three different events and placed 16th in his first Big Ten Championship.
  • Ohio State will also have graduate transfer Marco Steyn this season. Steyn played the last four years at Wake Forest where he averaged 72.69 in 27 events for the Demon Deacons.
  • This week is the first of four fall events that will culminate with the Barbara Nicklaus Cup on Oct. 4-5 at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.
  • Erin Hills has hosted the Marquette Intercollegiate six times since 2013 and served as host of the 2017 US Open. This is the first time Ohio State has played in the event.
  • There will also be an individual event this weekend held at nearby Washington County Golf Club in Hartford, Wisc. Jackson Chandler, Adam Wallin and Marco Steyn will be competing for the Buckeyes.
  • The weather forecast looks great for the three days with temperatures expected around 70 degrees with just a slight chance of rain.
