COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s basketball team is ranked No. 7 in the first Associated Press poll for the upcoming 2006-07 season. The Buckeyes, also rated seventh in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA preseason rankings, are the two-time defending Big Ten champions. Defending national champion Maryland is the top-ranked team.
The Buckeyes are one of three Big Ten squads ranked in the AP preseason Top 25. Purdue is slated 11th, ahead of Michigan State’s No. 17 standing.
Oklahoma, ranked third overall, is the highest rated Ohio State opponent in 2006-07. The Buckeyes and Sooners play Dec. 20 in Norman, Okla. Oklahoma landed two first-place votes. LSU, a Final Four team the last three seasons, stands 10th. The Lady Tigers welcome the Buckeyes to Baton Rouge, La., Dec. 10.
Kentucky, rated 15th, visits Value City Arena Jan. 6 and No. 22 Southern Cal serves as the Buckeyes’ opponent in its home opener Nov. 19. Boston College (Nov. 21) and Washington (Dec. 3) visit VCA this season as well. Both teams are received votes in the preseason poll.
