COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind 12 saves from Regan Alexander and five Nicole Ferrara goals, the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team topped Temple, 10-9, on a sunny afternoon in Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium Sunday.
Ohio State trailed 4-3 after the first quarter and 5-4 at halftime, but scored four goals to start the third quarter to push ahead 8-5 and did not relinquish the lead after that. The Owls outscored the Buckeyes 3-1 in the fourth, drawing within one with 23 seconds left, but Ohio State closed out the victory.
The Buckeyes improve to 2-0 this year after an 18-6 win over Robert Morris in the season opener Friday. Ohio State heads to California for two games next weekend, where it will play at San Diego State at 8 p.m. ET Friday and at USC at 4 p.m. ET Sunday.
How it Happened
- Temple opened the scoring at 10:45 before back-to-back Buckeye goals from Ashley Turner, set up by Zoe Coleman, and Jamie Lasda unassisted put Ohio State ahead 2-1 at 6:52.
- The Owls scored the next three for a 4-2 lead with 2:46 left in the first. Lasda found Nicole Ferrara in front for a goal with 44 seconds left in the first quarter, cutting the Temple lead to one (4-3).
- Each team scored just once in the second quarter for a 5-4 game at halftime. The Owls found the back of the cage early in the quarter. In the final minute Casey Roberts found Ferrara cutting through the middle for a quick strike with the Buckeyes a player up.
- Ohio State came out of halftime on fire, notching the first four goals, including two free position tallies, in the first 5:42. Lasda drove the net and scored at 13:06 to tie the game.
- The Buckeyes tallied three times in 60 seconds – Ferrara and Turner both converted free position shots at 10:18 and 10:03 and Turner set up Jamie Level for a score at 9:18.
- Temple stopped the Buckeye run at 4:37 but just 23 seconds later Ferrara again scored on a free position, putting the Buckeyes ahead 9-6. The quarter ended with the Buckeyes maintaining the three-goals edge.
- A free position goal by Temple’s Julie Schickling, her third tally of the day, made it a two-goal game (9-7) at 13:54.
- Roberts and Ferrara again connected, putting the Buckeyes up 10-7 at 5:17.
- Temple’s Schickling found the back of the cage with 1:55 left for a two-goal contest. The Owls drew within one with 23 seconds remaining, taking advantage of a Buckeye turnover after a timeout and scoring on a fastbreak.
- The Buckeyes closed out the game, with Level recording the final draw control to give Ohio State
- Ohio State had the edge in draw controls, 12-11, with Level recording eight. The Owls were ahead in ground balls, 20-17. Alexander and Roberts led the Buckeyes with three each, while Sarah Johnson, Margaret Lawler and Ava Keethler each had two.
Buckeye This and That
- Ferrara had her second straight five-goal game, one off the career-best six she had against Northwestern in 2021. She is on a 23-game point streak, with 57 goals and 81 points in the stretch, and has 114 points, with 79 goals, in the Scarlet and Gray.
- Alexander’s 12 saves were one shy of her personal best recorded vs. Cincinnati last season.
- Roberts, a freshman, picked up her first two collegiate assists after a goal in the season opener. Coleman, her classmate, notched her first assist and point as a Buckeye.
- Level’s eight draw controls were her most as a Buckeye, topping the seven she had at Colorado last season.
