PALM COAST, Florida—Ohio State beat both Rutgers and Wisconsin to advance to the semifinals of the Big Ten Match Play to face off against the number one seed, Illinois. In the first round, the Buckeyes downed Rutgers, 3.5-2.5, then beat Wisconsin 3-3 by tiebreaker to pick up two wins on the day.
Rutgers kept the first round close, as five of the six matches stayed within one shot for nearly nine holes. Kevin Stone won his first hole and held the lead throughout the match, never losing a hole, winning 3&1. Will Voetsch was down early, before flipping the match and going as high as three-up, before closing it out at 2&1. Caleb Ramirez also won his match, finishing one-up, while Will Grimmer halved his opponent. Justin Wick was down four, with six holes to play and clawed his way back to all square before dropping the final hole. Daniel Wetterich also kept his match competitive, staying within one shot for 12 holes before falling two-down to his opponent.
The second round matchup versus Wisconsin was a tale of extremes as there were three matches decided by the 13th hole of competition. Ramirez came out of the gate on fire as he quickly dispatched of his opponent, winning by a dominant 7&6. Voetsch followed up his first-round victory with another impressive performance, claiming a 5&3 victory over his opponent. The third victory for the Buckeyes came at the hands of Stone who won another 2&1 nail biter to go 2-0 for the tournament. Wetterich lost his match 5&4, with Grimmer and Mancinotti close behind at 3&1 and two-up respectively. The match concluded, 3-3, but Ohio State claimed victory, winning the tiebreaker which added up the margins of victory from each individual pairing.
