COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s track and field team heads to West Lafayette, Ind. this Friday and Saturday, May 2-3, for the Dave Rankin Invite hosted by Purdue University.  

The meet will allow the Buckeyes to preview the venue in which they will be competing for a Big Ten outdoor championship at only a couple weeks later. Rankin Track and Field, the outdoor facility for Purdue track and field, will play host to the 2014 Big Ten Outdoor Championships May 16-18.

This weekend’s meet gets underway Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. with the hammer throw. Action picks back up Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with the javelin throw. The first running event, the 3000-meter steeplechase, is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start.

Alexis Franklin Named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week

Ohio State women’s track and field sophomore Alexis Franklin has been named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Competing at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa this past Friday Franklin ran a season-best time of 57.81 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles. The Millersville, Md., native’s time is the 12th-fastest in Division I this season and was only .35 seconds shy of her personal-best time in the event.

It marks the second Big Ten weekly honor for the 2013 Big Ten 400-meter hurdles champion and 2013 Big Ten Freshman of the Year. It was also the third-consecutive victory for Franklin as she also claimed first place in the event at the Jesse Owens Track Classic in Columbus April 18 and at the LSU Battle of the Bayou back on April 5.

Last Time Out

Sophomore Alexis Franklin turned in a season-best time of 57.81 seconds to win the 400-meter hurdles Friday afternoon at the 2014 Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

Franklin, a native of Millersville, Md., defeated runner-up Kayla Stueckle of Washington by .15 seconds with the 12th-fastest time in Division I this season. Her season-best time is .35 seconds shy of her personal best, set last season at the Big Ten championships.

On Thursday night, junior Michelle Thomas used a personal-best time of 34:49.11 to place second in the 10,000-meter run. The runner-up time by Thomas is the third best in school history.

The Ohio State Distance Medley team – sophomore Tammy Berger, Franklin, freshman Rachel Weber and junior Katie Borchers – combined for a school outdoor-record time of 11:31.05 Saturday afternoon at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, highlighting the final day of competition for the Buckeyes.
