Vicky Villanueva leads Ohio State with opening round of even-par 71

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 23 Ohio State women’s golf team’s first round at the NCAA West Regional didn’t go quite as planned Thursday, but the Buckeyes managed to stay within striking distance of consecutive national championship appearances as they stand in eighth place out of 24 teams. Grounded by sophomore Vicky Villanueva’s round of 71, the Buckeyes carded a team score of 12-over 296 on the par 71, 6,115-yard Stanford Golf Course.

Ohio State, the regional’s fourth seed, is just five shots back of Virginia and Arizona, who are tied at the top of the leaderboard at 291. That pair is followed by top-seeded UCLA and California (292), Texas (293) and Alabama and UNLV (295). The Buckeyes are a shot ahead of host Stanford.

Villanueva, a native of Chacabuco, Argentina, had four bogeys in her round but always came back with birdies to return to par. After moving to 2-over with three holes to go, Villanueva buckled down to make back-to-back birdies and closed with par on her last hole to secure an even 71 and tie for sixth.

Freshman Rachel Rohanna started out strong and was 1-under through her first three holes, but hit a tough patch while nearing the turn with four-consecutive bogeys. The Waynesburg, Pa., product steadied out and was even on her last nine holes for a round of 74 to tie for 26th.

First-round scores also included junior In Hong Lim with a 75 to tie for 35th and senior Emma Jandel with a 76 to tie for 47th. Rookie Amy Meier had a tough time in her first NCAA round, shooting an 84 to tie for 114th.

The NCAA West Regional continues Friday with the second of three rounds. After teeing off in the morning session during the first day, the Buckeyes will have afternoon tee times for round two beginning at 1:26 p.m. (PT). Live scoring for all three NCAA regionals is available on
