Buckeyes in Action at the ITA Midwest Regionals
COLUMBUS, Ohio –The Ohio State women’s tennis team competed at the annual ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., Thursday through Tuesday. The tandem of Shiori Fukuda and Luna Dormet led the way, finishing as the doubles runner-up, while Fukuda and Danielle Wolf reached the singles quarterfinals.
Thursday (Oct. 18)
Redshirt junior Danielle Wolf opened play for the Buckeyes in the qualifying draw. She won in straight sets in the first round, prevailing over Georgie Sanders of Illinois-Chicago, 7-5, 6-1. In the second round, the Buckeye defeated Notre Dame’s Bess Waldram, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Also in the first round, Luna Dormet took down Anastasiia Khokhlova of Youngstown State, 6-3, 6-1. Dormet’s second round resulted in another straight set victory for the Buckeye sophomore over Eastern Illinois’ Rachel Papavasilopoulos, 6-3, 6-4.
Friday (Oct. 19)
In the qualifying singles draw, both Buckeyes posted a third-straight win to earn a spot in the main draw.
Luna Dormet did not give up a single point in her match against Marta Bettinelli of Bowling Green. Wolf had an impressive victory over Chicago State’s Kristina Pukhaeva, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
In main draw doubles, the tandem of redshirt sophomore Shiori Fukuda and Dormet received a bye for the first round and took the court for round two, defeating Lemonds and Szabo of Michigan State, 8-7 (5).
The Ohio State duo of Wolf and Hurley also received a bye for round one of doubles and claimed a victory in round two. The Buckeyes took down Lewis and Nguyen of Michigan State, 8-2.
Saturday (Oct. 20)
Shiori Fukuda and Danielle Wolf both advanced to the Round of 16 in the singles main draw. Fukuda, a 5-8 seed, had a first round bye and then defeated Inci Ogut of Northwestern in a close match, 7-5, 7-6 (4). Wolf, who came through qualifying, won in straight sets over Miruna Vasilesco of Akron in the first round. In the second round, the Buckeye won in three sets over Emilee Duong of Illinois, a 5-8 seed. Mary Beth Hurley won her first round match in straight sets over Shivani Ingle of Illinois, but lost to No. 2 seed Giulia Pairone in the second round. Luna Dormet, who earned a spot from the qualifying draw, lost her first round match.
Both Buckeye doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals. Fukuda and Dormet topped Michigan’s Pairone and Craciun, 8-5 and Wolf and Hurley advanced with an 8-6 win over Vasilesco and Pedroso of Akron.
Sunday (Oct. 21)
One round of singles and two rounds of doubles were held Sunday. Wolf and Fukuda led the Buckeye squad, advancing to the singles quarterfinals. The Buckeye doubles team of Fukuda and Dormet opened the day with a win in the quarterfinals, followed by a semifinal victory to advance to the doubles final.
In the doubles quarterfinals, in addition to Fukuda and Dormet’s victory over Pedraza Novak and Belaya the duo of Wolf and Hurley fell to Michigan’s Fahey and Minor, 8-1. Fukuda and Dormet faced Byrne and Doshi of Northwestern in the semifinals where they posted an 8-5 victory.
In singles, Fukuda advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-3 win Sunday. The Buckeye sophomore topped Michigan’s Alyvia Jones, a No. 9-16 seed, in the Round of 16. Wolf defeated Ava Thielman in straight sets, 7-6, 6-0, in the Round of 16.
Monday (Oct. 22)
Ohio State was the runner-up for the ITA Midwest Regional doubles championship. In the doubles final, Shiori Fukuda and Luna Dormet gave the Wolverine duo of Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor a great match, including saving two match points, but the U-M tandem prevailed, 8-6.
In the quarterfinals, Fukuda faced one half of the victorious Michigan doubles champions, Brienne Minor. The Buckeye won the first set but Minor rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, victory. Danielle Wolf was up against the other half of the Wolverine doubles champions, Kate Fahey, with Wolf falling in straight sets.
The Buckeyes will head to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Tennessee Fall Invite Friday through Sunday.
