Buckeyes in Action at Michigan Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 13-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan for the Michigan Invitational to kick off the spring season. Junior Andrea Ballinger, redshirt sophomore Danielle Wolf and freshman Emma DeCoste competed in the event, which was a hidden dual style tournament with no team scoring. 

Ballinger led the Buckeyes with two singles wins over the tournament. DeCoste notched her first wins in both singles and doubles as a Buckeye.

On day one, Andrea Ballinger and Emma DeCoste picked up singles wins and DeCoste paired with Danielle Wolf for a doubles victory.

Ballinger won 6-3, 6-0 over Gabriela Tenorio of Texas Tech.

DeCoste’s straight set win over Alex Najarian of Michigan, 6-2, 7-6, marked the first of her Buckeye career. She joined the squad for spring semester. 

In doubles, DeCoste and Wolf shut out the Wolverine duo of Mira Ruder-Hook and Bella Lorenzini, 6-0.

Day two featured a win by Andrea Ballinger over Michigan’s Alex Najarian in straight sets, 7-6 (6), 6-4. Danielle Wolf rallied from losing the first set in a tiebreak to defeat the Wolverines’ Kara Hall, 6-7 (6), 6-2, 6-2.

Emma DeCoste lost a close match to Michigan’s Mira Ruder-Hook, 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles, the duo of DeCoste and Wolf fell to Arizona State’s Lauren John Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh, 6-2.

Day three featured two singles matches and a doubles match for the Buckyes.

Emma DeCoste lost in three sets against Michigan’s Lera Patiuk, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Andrea Ballinger fell in straight sets to the Wolverines’ Bella Lorenzini. DeCoste and Danielle Wolf dropped a 6-4 decision to Lana Rush and Alex Valenstein of Texas Tech, 6-4.

Looking Ahead
The Buckeyes will hit the courts Friday through Sunday at the Miami Fall Invite in Miami, Fla., in another hidden dual style tournament

The first dual matches for the Buckeyes will be in Columbus Jan. 26-27 when Ohio State hosts ITA Kickoff Weekend matches. The Buckeyes will face Kansas in the first round, with Arkansas taking on Wake Forest. The winners and losers will meet on day two, with the site winner advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Madison, Wis. Admission is free to all matches, which will be held in the Varsity Tennis Center.
