Buckeyes in Action at ITA Midwest Regionals

COLUMBUS, Ohio –The Ohio State women’s tennis team competed at the annual ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Ann Arbor, which ran from Thursday-Tuesday.

Buckeye freshman Shiori Fukuda led the squad at the tournament, advancing to the singles final in her first regional appearance.  

Two Buckeye teams – Fukuda and classmate Maria Tyrina and seniors Anna Sanford and Olivia Sneed – reached the doubles semifinals.

Thursday (Oct. 12)
Junior Andrea Ballinger opened play for the Buckeyes in the qualifying draw. She won a close match in the first round, prevailing over Carli Knezevich of Akron, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. In the second round, the Buckeye lost to Eastern Illinois’ Emily Pugachevsky, 6-3, 6-3.

Friday (Oct. 13)
In main draw doubles, the tandem of freshman Mary Beth Hurley and Danielle Wolf was the first to take the court for the Buckeyes. The duo defeated Baylis and Memije of Michigan State, 8-5. In the second round, Ohio State’s tandem fell to the No. 3 seed from Notre Dame, Broda and Miller, 8-4.

The Ohio State duos of seniors Anna Sanford and Olivia Sneed and redshirt freshmen Shiori Fukuda and Maria Tyrina both are 5-8 seeds, received first round byes and then won in the second round. The senior tandem defeated Northern Illinois’ Molligoda and Youel, 8-4. The freshmen were 8-2 winners over Thielman and Chua of Michigan State.

Saturday (Oct. 14)
The day began with the doubles Round of 16, with both Buckeye doubles teams advancing.

The freshman tandem of Shiori Fukuda and Maria Tyrina, a No. 5-8 seed, defeated No. 9-16 seed Ogut/Doshi of Northwestern, 8-5. The Buckeyes will play Corse and Spence of Notre Dame, a No. 9-16 seed who topped No. 1-ranked Fahey and Najarian of Michigan in the Round of 16, Sunday in the quarterfinals.

No. 5-8 seed seniors Anna Sanford and Olivia Sneed were 8-2 winners over Kostyuk and Shepherd of Chicago State in the Round of 16. They will face No. 2 seed Metcalf and Nguyen of Michigan State in the quarterfinals.

In singles, Tyrina rallied for a three set win in the first round, topping Bowling Green’s Paula Comella,1-6, 6-3, 6-4. She lost to Notre Dame’s Allison Miller, a No. 5-8 seed, in another three set match in the second round, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6.

Sophomore Danielle Wolf won her first round match over Michigan State’s Samantha Memije, 6-4, 7-5. She faced her Buckeye teammate, Fukuda, in the second round, with the freshman prevailing, 6-2, 6-3.

Freshman Mary Beth Hurley won her opening match, downing DePaul’s Keisha Clousing, 6-3, 7-6 (5). It set up another all-Buckeye match, with Sneed, a No. 9-16 seed who had a first round bye, winning 6-1, 6-4.

Sanford, the No. 2 seed, had a first round bye and then dropped her second round match to Emilee Duong of Illinois, 6-1, 6-2.

Sunday (Oct. 15)
One round of singles and two rounds of doubles were held Sunday. Freshman Shiori Fukuda led the Buckeye squad, advancing to the singles quarterfinals. Two Buckeye doubles teams opened the day with wins in the quarterfinals, but then fell in tiebreakers in the semifinals.

In the quarterfinals, the freshman duo of Maria Tyrina and Fukuda rallied from a 5-1 deficit against Corse and Spence of Notre Dame to win 8-6. In the semifinals against Northwestern’s Larner and Lipp, the No. 4 seed, the Buckeye tandem again came from behind. With the match tied at two, the Wildcats went on a three-game run for a 5-2 advantage. The Buckeyes responded with a three-game run of their own for 5-all. Each team held its next two games to send the match to a tiebreaker. In the breaker, Northwestern went ahead 5-1. The Buckeyes were able to cut the score to 5-3 and 6-5, but could get no closer.

The senior tandem of Anna Sanford and Olivia Sneed topped No. 2 seed and No. 14-ranked Metcalf and Nguyen from Michigan State in the quarterfinals, 8-2. The Buckeyes then faced Northwestern’s Or and Chatt in the semifinals. The Buckeyes were up a break (6-3), but the Wildcats won the next three games for a 6-all match. Each team held to force a tiebreaker. Northwestern led 3-1 and 5-2 in the breaker; Ohio State won the next point for 5-3, but the Wildcats claimed the final two points to advance and set up an all-Wildcat final.

In singles, Fukuda advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-0 win Sunday. The Buckeye freshman, a No. 5-8 seed, topped Michigan’s Mira Ruder-Hook, a No. 9-12 seed, in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals Monday, Fukuda will take on Illinois’ Asuka Kawai at 10:30 a.m. The singles semifinals will follow at 1:30 p.m. The final is slated for 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Sneed, a No. 9-12 seed, fell to Michigan’s Chiara Lommer, a 5-8 seed ranked No. 115, 7-5, 6-3, in her Round of 16 match.

Monday (Oct. 16)
Shiori Fukuda downed Asuka Kawai of Illinois in the quarterfinals. She won the final two games in the first set for a 7-5 victory. In the second set, the Buckeye jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Kawai won the next three to cut the score to 5-4, but the Buckeye broke to win the set, 6-4, and claim the match.

In the semifinals, Fukuda was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Northwestern’s Rheeya Doshi. The Buckeye broke to open the match. Following a hold by each player, Fukuda won the next two games. Doshi made the score 4-2 with a break, but Fukuda returned the break and then held to win the set. Fukuda jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set. Doshi held for 4-1, but the Buckeye held serve to go ahead 5-1 and then broke for the set and match victories.

Monday (Oct. 17)
Buckeye freshman Shiori Fukuda competed in the championship match of the regional against Michigan’s No. 115-ranked Chiara Lommer. She was looking to win the first regional title in program history. 

Lommer claimed the first set, 6-0, winning four of the games on the no-ad point. in the second set, Fukuda broke to win the first game followed by a hold by each player. Fukuda broke again to go ahead 3-1, the start of four straight games where neither player could hold serve, giving Fukuda a 4-3 lead. Lommer ended the streak and held to get on serve at four-all and then won the next two games, serving out the final game to win the title.
