Buckeyes in Action at ITA All-American Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff of the Ohio State women’s tennis team traveled to Cary, N.C., for the 2022 ITA All-American Championships this week.

The pair reached the final of the doubles consolation bracket, while No. 7 seed Cantos Siemers lost in the second round of the singles main draw. Ratliff notched a win in qualifying singles.

The Buckeyes will host the Ohio State Invitational Friday through Sunday at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center at the Auer Tennis Complex. Admission is free, with singles and doubles slated for each day. A full schedule will be available later this week.

Consolation Doubles Final (Sunday)

In the final, Cantos Siemers and Ratliff, ranked 24th, faced Auburn’s Carolyn Ansari and Ariana Arseneault. The Tiger duo raced to a first-set win, 6-0. In the second, the Buckeyes broke for an early 2-1 lead but the Tigers got back even at four-all. The teams held the rest of the way (with Ohio State saving two match points serving at 5-6), sending the set to a tiebreaker. In the breaker, the teams were even at two-all before Auburn won the next two points for a 4-2 advantage. Ohio State was unable to draw level again and the Tigers ended with a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker to claim the match.

Consolation Doubles Semifinals (Saturday)

Cantos Siemers and Ratliff rallied for a win in the semifinals against No. 44-ranked Tatsiana Sasnouskaya and Sofia Johnson of Old Dominion. The Buckeyes dropped the first set, 6-4, but won the second, 6-3, to force a match tiebreak, where they prevailed, 10-7, to advance.

Consolation Doubles Quarterfinals (Friday)

Cantos Siemers and Ratliff moved on to the consolation semifinals with a straight-set win in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon. The Buckeyes defeated No. 52-ranked Julia Adams and Annabelle Xu of Virginia, 7-6 (9), 6-2.

Consolation Doubles Round of 16 (Thursday)

Cantos Siemers and Ratliff did not drop a game in their first consolation match, downing No. 37-ranked Ting Pei Chang and Camilla Bossi of West Virginia, 6-0, 6-0.

Main Draw Singles (Wednesday/Thursday)

Cantos Siemers was the No. 7 seed in the 32-player main draw. She opened the tournament with a straight-set win over No. 100 Emma Jackson of Duke, 6-3, 6-3.

The Buckeye junior faced Texas A&M’s No. 58 Mary Stoiana in the second round Thursday. Cantos came back from an early break in the first set that eventually went to a tiebreaker won by Stoiana, 7-6 (6). Stoiana captured the second set 6-1 to advance.

Main Draw Doubles (Wednesday)

In the first round of the 32-team doubles draw, No. 24 Cantos Siemers and Ratliff fell to No. 31 Elizabeth Scotty and Abigail Forbes of North Carolina, 6-3, 6-3.

Qualifying Singles

Ratliff was a No. 9-16 seed in the 64-player qualifying draw. She rallied to win her opening round match against No. 97 Katja Wiersholm of Cal, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0. In the second round, Ratliff fell to Vanderbilt’s Celia-Belle Mohr, 6-1, 6-2.
