COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeyes finished round one of the Nike Collegiate Invitational with a five-over 289 to place 15th through 18 holes. Ohio State is part of a field featuring nine teams ranked in the GCAA top-25 and it showed in the opening round as nine teams are even par or under with Oklahoma leading the way at 14-under.

Felix Kvarnstom followed up his fourth place finish at Inverness last week with an opening round 71 to take a share of 30th at even par. Kvarnstorm bogeyed his first hole but got that shot back on the next, finishing the back nine one-over with just one other blemish on hole 18. He birdied number two and seven before finishing the day with a bogey on nine. The graduate student managed four birdies and 11 pars on the tough Witch Hollow course at Pumpkin Ridge.

Grant Engle played a steady opening round, carding 15 pars and one birdie, finishing the day one over to share 41st place. Engle made just one bogey on each side for the day, turning in a solid round for the Scarlet and Gray.

Jackson Chandler bounced back from last week, matching Engle’s one-over 72, good enough for 41st place through one round. The freshman started the day with four pars, exchanged three bogeys for two birdies on his succeeding five holes, then ran the table with pars on his second nine to turn in the best round of his young career.

Patrick Schmucking turned in the final counting score, rolling in two birdies but finding trouble on the championship course, finishing with a three-over 74.

Kevin Stone rounded out the starting five with a five-over 76 in his opening round that featured his first eagle of the year.
