COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s gymnastics squad gave its fans a sneak peek of what is headed their way during the 2018 season on Saturday afternoon at its annual Scarlet & Gray Meet inside St. John Arena.

“I was really pleased with the team’s performance,” said head coach Meredith Paulicivic. “We had eight athletes who have never competed in a big arena or college setting, so it was a good test for them. We had lots of positives to build on and much room for improvement.”

The intrasquad meet featured athletes in all four events, with 12 Buckeyes competing on vault, 11 on floor and 10 on bars and beam.

Senior Vice President & Wolfe Foundation Endowed Athletics Director Gene Smith and Associate Director of Athletics for Sport Administration Shaun Richard were two of the four guest judges. Instead of the typical scoring, the judges were given emoji scorecards to rate the performances.

“What a great experience, having a chance to witness talented and gifted gymnasts up close,” said Smith. “All judges in all meets should use emojis.”

“It was an honor to be asked to participate in the Scarlet & Gray Meet,” said Richard. “I’m so impressed by the evolution of this team from September to today. I take judging very seriously in respect to the sport, especially on beam, but 😎 and 🔥 were flying all over the place for good reason. So much fun!”

The Buckeyes officially kick of the 2018 campaign on the road at UCLA on Jan. 6 at 9 p.m. ET.
