Last Time Out: New Hampshire

Ohio State earned its first series sweep of the season this past weekend at non-conference New Hampshire. The Buckeyes edged UNH 3-2 Saturday and finished off the sweep with a 2-0 victory Sunday. Senior goaltender Lisa Steffes started both games for the Buckeyes, making 23 saves Saturday and 21 saves Sunday. It was the first shutout for an Ohio State goaltender this season. Sophomore Kendall Curtis and junior Danielle Gagne had the game-winning scores on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Sophomores Julia McKinnon and Melani Moylan, as well as freshman Claudia Kepler, all scored goals for OSU in the series also. McKinnon finished with a three-point weekend while Moylan finished with two.

Steffes Named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week

Ohio State women’s hockey senior goaltender Lisa Steffes has been named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. It marks the second time this season Steffes has garnered this award and it is the fifth career WCHA weekly award for the Amherstburg, Ontario, native. She was twice named WCHA Rookie of the Week during the 2010-11 season and now has been WCHA Defensive Player of the Week three times including Nov. 2, 2011 and Oct. 23, 2013. Steffes, who has started eight games this season, is currently posting career bests in both goals-against average (1.61) and save percentage (.942).

News and Notes

  • Steffes and the Buckeyes penalty kill held the Wildcats scoreless on all six of their power play chances in the series.
  • Ohio State’s penalty kill is 53-63 this season, an 84.1 percent success rate.
  • Kari Schmitt and Sara Schmitt each had an assist in the UNH series. Sara has a team-leading 13 points on four goals and nine assists while Kari is right behind with 12 points on four goals and eight assists.
  • Senior Ally Tarr picked up her ninth assist of the season Saturday. Tarr is tied with Sara Schmitt for the team lead.
  • The Buckeyes dropped a non-conference game this past Tuesday at the OSU Ice Rink. OSU fell to Robert Morris by a score of 2-1. The lone goal for OSU came off the stick of Kepler. Steffes stopped 24 shots in the loss for the Buckeyes.
  • Four Buckeyes share the team lead in goals scored with four including Curtis, Kepler and Kari and Sara Schmitt.

About Minnesota

Minnesota is coming off its second-consecutive national title run, and before losing to 3-2 to No. 4 North Dakota Nov. 17, Minnesota had won an NCAA record 62-consecutive games dating back to Feb. 28, 2012. The Gophers are now riding a new winning streak of four games coming into this series and have won 37-consecutive road games. This season Minnesota is led offensively by sophomore Hannah Brandt (9-20-29), junior Rachael Bona (8-19-27), senior Kelly Terry (12-12-24) and senior Sarah Davis (10-14-24). Sophomore goaltender Amanda Leveille has started every game while posting a goals-against average of 1.31 and a .943 save percentage. Head coach Brad Frost is now in his seventh season at the helm of the Minnesota program.

Buckeyes vs. Gophers

Ohio State and Minnesota last met in the WCHA Final Face-Off semi-finals, with the Gophers coming out on top 5-0. The Buckeyes are 8-55-1 all-time against Minnesota and their last win against the Gophers came back on Oct. 20, 2007.

The Buckeyes will be off for winter break following their series with Minnesota and will return to the ice Jan. 3-4, 2014, for a non-conference series and first ever matchup with Penn State. The games will take place at the OSU Ice Rink with Friday’s contest set for a 7:07 p.m. start and a 4:07 p.m. start is scheduled for Saturday.
