COLUMBUS, Ohio – With 26 players invited to the Ohio State Scholar-Athlete Dinner and a team cumulative grade point average of a 3.02, the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team has achieved its academic goals for 2009-10.

Entering the year, the squad set goals in a number of areas – competitive, in the classroom and in the community. After hitting the community service goal of 500 hours before the spring playing season began, another goal can be checked off the list, as the squad aimed for half of its 46-man roster to post a 3.0 cumulative GPA to earn an invitation to the annual scholar-athlete dinner and to combine for a squad cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Nick Myers, head coach of the Buckeyes, appreciates the work the team has put in to reach its goals. The team had a 3.13 grade point average winter quarter while increasing the community service hours to more than 600 for the year.

“I’m really proud of the men and how hard they’ve worked these two quarters to achieve our academic goal of a 3.0 GPA and having at least half of our players named Ohio State Scholar-Athletes. It’s one more area the whole team can be proud of.”

Senior Chris Lowery will earn his fourth Ohio State Scholar-Athlete award this year. A member of the inaugural Big Ten Distinguished Scholars list that honors letterwinners with a 3.7 grade point average or higher, he and his teammates take advantage of the academic resources available on campus.

“We have a saying that it is Family, Academics and Lacrosse,” Lowery said. “Academics are one of the most important things we focus on. Obviously we’re here as student-athletes first. The coaches stress every day about study table hours, getting tutors, taking care of our responsibilities and taking advantage of the resources we have at SASSO. We have goals of achieving marks in certain areas as a team and we’ve been successful with that so far.”

Ben Carignan, the athletic academic counselor for the Buckeyes, recognizes the effort and focus the program puts into academics.

“Under the leadership of Coach Myers and his staff, the men’s lacrosse team has proven to be among the best here at Ohio State,” Carignan said. “The student-athletes have worked tirelessly this year to continue the tradition of academic excellence with the men’s lacrosse program.

“What the numbers don’t show is the amount of work all the young men put forth every day. Anyone associated with the men’s lacrosse team should be proud of the team’s effort. Considering their schedules and commitments academically and athletically, their work ethic, attitude and commitment to academics continues to raise the bar and deepen the tradition of academic excellence within the men’s lacrosse program and the Ohio State Department of Athletics.”
