This weekend, Emma DeCoste and Mary Beth Hurley of the Ohio State women’s tennis team participated in the Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana.
The Buckeyes were joined by players from host Indiana, Marquette, Western Michigan, Kansas State, Cincinnati, Middle Tennessee State and Louisville in the tournament.
Play began Friday with one round of singles and two rounds of doubles. Saturday included two singles and two doubles rounds and Sunday featured just singles play.
On Friday, both Buckeyes excelled in their singles matches. Mary Beth Hurley topped Ines Mesquita from Kansas State in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Emma Decoste followed with a victory over Indiana’s Michelle McKamey, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. The duo dropped its doubles match to the University of Louisville’s Nina Jovic and Dina Chaika, 8-6.
On Saturday, the Buckeyes came together to win their doubles match against IoanaGuna/Ana Philp of Cincinnati, 8-3. Hurley continued her winning streak, taking down Olga Zavarotnaya of Indiana, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). DeCoste held on during an eventful match-up with Maya Smith of University of Louisville but was edged out in the third set, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
The Buckeyes returned to the courts Sunday morning to finish the tournament. Hurley remained undefeated with a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, victory over Anna Turco of Kansas State. DeCoste also finished the tournament with a winning match, downing Nina Chaika of University of Louisville 6-4, 6-3.
