Buckeyes Head to NCAA Great Lakes Regional

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Friday, the Ohio State men’s and No. 25-ranked women’s cross country teams will compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

The women will run a 6K, starting at 10 a.m., followed by the men’s 10K at 11 a.m. Live results will be available HERE.

Buckeyes at NCAA Regionals

  • This is the seventh time the Great Lakes Regional will be in Terre Haute (1998, ’99, ’01, ’03, ’17, ’18). The course also hosted the NCAA Championships 13 times, most recently in 2019.
  • At the regional last year in Evansville, Ind., the Buckeye women finished sixth as a team. Addie Engel was third to earn All-Great Lakes Region honors. Current Buckeyes Andrea Kuhn, Akemi Von Scherr and Daniella Santos all ran in last year’s race.
  • On the men’s side, five current Buckeyes were in last year’s race – Zubin Jha, Kevin Agnew, Giovanni Copploe, Ivan Slyepkan and John Cuozzo. The men were 12th at the 2021 regional.

In the Rankings

  • In the most recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national rankings, the Ohio State women are No. 25 nationally.
  • In the Great Lakes Region rankings from Oct. 31, the women are No. 6. Notre Dame is No. 1, followed by Toledo, Michigan State, Michigan and Wisconsin.
  • For the men in the Great Lakes Region, Ohio State is No. 12. Wisconsin is No. 1 in the region, with Notre Dame, Michigan, Butler and Michigan State rounding out the Top 5.

This and That

  • The Buckeyes started the postseason at the Big Ten Championships Oct. 28 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Addie Engel was the race champion, capturing the first B1G title in program history. Daniella Santos (fourth) and Andrea Kuhn (sixth) were also in the Top 7 to join Engel as All-Big Ten honorees. The women were fourth as a team, with Akemi Von Scherr and Morgan Schmitt rounding out the Buckeyes’ counters.
  • On the men’s side, the Ohio State squad finished eighth. Giovanni Copploe was 27th to lead the Buckeye men, with Nathaniel Tamminga, Zach Shultz, Sean Carney and Zubin Jha the other Buckeye counters.
  • Engel is a three-time Big Ten Athlete of the Week and earned USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week accolades this season. She has placed in the Top 5 in nine of her last 12 races, and in the Top 16 in all but NCAAs in the stretch (where she was 66th at her first NCAA meet). She has finished first or second in every race she has run this year.
  • The trio of Engel, Daniella Santos and Andrea Kuhn have been the Buckeyes’ Top 3 finishers, in that order, in the five races they have run this season. All three finished in the Top 10 in the five races.
  • Nathaniel Tamminga has been among the Buckeyes’ Top 3 finishers in the five races he has run this season. Giovanni Copploe has been first or second for Ohio State each of the last three outings.

Looking Ahead

  • The NCAA Championships will be held in Stillwater, Okla., Nov. 19. The race will be televised by ESPNU, with the women’s 6k at 10:20 a.m. ET and the men’s 10K at 11:10 a.m. ET.
  • The official NCAA championship field will be announced at 5 p.m. Nov. 12 on NCAA.com.
