CINCINNATI, Ohio – Fittingly, Cincinnati natives Will Grimmer and Daniel Wetterich have pushed the Ohio State University men’s golf into contention at the Bearcat Invitational hosted on Cincinnati’s Coldstream Country Club. The Buckeyes (-1) are a lone stroke back from event-leading Michigan State (-2) while Grimmer is tied for first individually following a 36-hole ledger of 6-under (69-67) on Monday.
Ohio State shaved seven strokes off its tally between rounds, recording subsequent scores of 287-280 to earn second place standing entering Tuesday’s final round. Grimmer led the charge firing rounds of 69-67 to sit atop the individual leaderboard alongside Michigan State’s Sam Weatherford (70-66). Wetterich joins Grimmer in the top-10, owning a share of eighth place at even par. Wetterich opened with a 74 before storming back in Monday’s second round and carding a 3-under 68.
Addison Coll was also a two-time contributor to the team total, posting scores of 73-72. His 3-over 145 sum is tied for 18th place overall in the 60-player field.
While the Buckeyes ranked just T-5th with 15 birdies, they excelled in avoiding ‘blow-up’ holes and secured a tournament-best 75 pars to give themselves a shot at the title. Grimmer’s five birdies accounted for one-third of the team total and ranked second among all players.
Clark Engle and Caleb Ramirez chipped in to the Buckeye trophy contention as well, both dropping in a score in the ‘play 6, count 4’ competition. Engle’s opening-round 71 and a 73 from Ramirez in round number two played into the Ohio State Day One success. Engle (71-76) is tied for 26th overall while Ramirez (77-73) comes in at T-40th. In addition, Josh Wick is donning the Cream and Crimson in southwest Ohio. Wick registered rounds of 80-75 to start the Bearcat Invitational.
