Buckeyes Finish Fifth at NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – In what was considered to be the best NCAA Championships in the 23-year history of the event, the Ohio State rowing team finished fifth overall with a total of 105 points. The Fours and Second Varsity Eight earned the team’s highest finishes with fifth-place finishes among the best Division I rowing programs in the country.

Washington was crowned the champion, sweeping the championships and earning a team total of 132 points.

The fifth-place finish is the Buckeyes’ 12th top-five finish in program history. The last time the team finished in the top-five of the NCAA Championships was in 2017 with another fifth-place finish. 

The First Varsity Eight raced a time of 6:11.042 to finish sixth in the Grand Finals for a sixth-place finish at this year’s championships. The boat, comprised of Anjali Fernandes, Leonie Heuer, Ida Petersen, Lexie Nothdurft, Ida Kruse, Jessy Vermeer, Alessandra Montesano, Sierra Tiede and Grace Libben, outperformed its seed coming into the event by two spots. The boat tied its finish from last year’s event.

The Second Varsity Eight recorded a fifth-place finish for the Buckeyes, crossing the finish with a time of 6:20.449. Manned by Sophie Blair, Mane Bravo Alvez, Sierra Cydrus, Meg Cymanski, Rachel DeWitte, Michaela Nordhaus, Maddie Perrett, Michayla Binkley and Claire Cannon, the boat improved on last year’s finish by three places and beat its seed by two spots.

The First Varsity Four of Divya Batchu, Kendell Massier, Julia Miklasevich, Ally Hatton and Maddie Frendberg closed out Ohio State’s season with another fifth-place finish and a time of 6:59.256 to earn 18 points toward the team final score.
