COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State shot a 2359 air rifle score on Saturday and finished with a two-day total of 4670 which put the Buckeyes in seventh place at the 2017 NCAA Rifle Championship.
This was the second consecutive year the Buckeyes had qualified for the NCAA Championship and just the third in school history. And for the second-straight season, OSU finished seventh at the finals.
In air rifle, junior Mark Matheny led the way for the Buckeyes with a score of 592. That was his third-highest score of the season. Fellow junior Drew Cheezum posted a 590 and was followed by freshmen Rhiann Travis with a 589 and Jacob Buchanan at 588. Sophomore Michael Steinel totaled a 586 to cap the Buckeyes scorers on Saturday.
In the overall team race, West Virginia claimed its fifth-straight title, edging TCU by 17 points. Mountaineer Milica Babic won a great final dual with teammate Morgan Phillips to take the individual air rifle title.
The Buckeyes had a tremendous season, setting the school’s single-match record in both guns, again topping its best NCAA three-score average and setting both individual single-match records. The future also looks bright as all five Buckeyes who competed this weekend will return next season.
