COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team fell short to No. 6 Minnesota in straight sets (25-23, 25-20, 26-24) Sunday afternoon inside the Covelli Center. The setback puts the Buckeyes at 13-13 overall and 6-8 in the Big Ten while the Golden Gophers improve to 19-3 and 13-1 in league action.
Jenaisya Moore and Gabby Gonzales combined for 26 of Ohio State’s 43 kills with 13 apiece. Moore also chipped in five digs and two blocks while Gonzales had nine digs, two assists and a service ace. Madison Smeathers and Elle Sandbothe rounded out the offense with eight and five kills, respectively.
Mac Podraza handed out 18 assists while Becca Mauer posted 15 helpers and five digs. Kylie Murr recorded a match-high 22 digs and paired it with six assists. Sandbothe had a team-best three blocks.
SET 1: The Buckeyes doubled up on the Gophers in the opening frame, 10-5. Minnesota put together an 8-1 run to take the lead, 15-13. Ohio State tied the score on two kills by Moore and the teams traded the following 14 points for 22-all. A kill and OSU error gave Minnesota the set, 25-23.
SET 2: A kill and ace by Gonzales locked the frame at 12-12. Ohio State called for time after Minnesota scored three straight points to go ahead 20-16. The Gophers rolled to a 25-20 win.
SET 3: Three unanswered points gave the Buckeyes an 11-9 advantage. The Gophers locked the score at 17-all but Moore’s kills put Ohio State in front, 20-17, and forced the visitors to use a timeout. Out of the break, Minnesota responded with a 3-0 run of its own for another tie at 20-20. The Gophers scored the last three points to take the set, 26-24.
The Buckeyes visit No. 15 Purdue for a rematch on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.
