TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 1 and defending national champion Arizona pulled away with eight runs in the fourth inning on its way to a 12-3 win in five innings over the Ohio State softball team Friday night at the Tempe Sports Complex. After winning its season-opener Friday over New Mexico, the Buckeyes slip to 1-1, while Arizona begins its 2007 season 1-0.

Ohio State scored its three runs on home runs by freshmen Whitney Cooper (Barstow, Calif./Barstow) and Sam Marder (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas). Cooper led off the third inning with a solo shot, while Marder hit a two-run homer in the fourth, marking her second home run of the day.

Ohio State, which lost to Arizona twice last year, including in the NCAA tournament in Tucson, Ariz., trailed just 3-1 entering the fourth inning when the Wildcats erupted for those eight runs off four extra-base hits, including two homers.

Senior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Buckeyes, who collected five hits in the game.

Ohio State senior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) worked the first three innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out six. Sophomore Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) and freshman Megan Miller (Woodland Hills, Calif./El Camino Real) combined to pitch the final two innings, allowing nine runs on eight hits.

Ohio State returns to the Tempe Sports Complex Saturday, when the Buckeyes will face Cal State Northridge at 11 a.m. (MT) and Texas Tech at 3:30 p.m. (MT).
