COLUMBUS, OHIO – Despite outshooting Lake Superior State 38-16, the No. 10 Ohio State Buckeyes fell this afternoon by a final score of 3-2. The loss ends OSUs 17 game home ice winning streak and their 19 game unbeaten streak.
%^$The early afternoon start did not affect the Lakers, who jumped out to a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the game. Ohio State tied it up half-way through the period on a power-play goal from Eric Meloche (Rosemere, Quebec), his fourth of the season.
%^$The Buckeyes took their only lead of the game 10:46 into the second period, when Brandon Lafrance (Navan, Ontario) shot one past Lake State goalie Mike Brusseau. It was Lafrance’s second goal in as many games.
%^$OSU failed to hold the lead, however. With just over three minutes remaining in the second period, Mike Vigilante banked home an odd angle goal off Buckeye goalie Jeff Maund (So., Mississauga, Ontario) to tie it up at 2-2.
%^$The Lakers took the lead for good when Fred Slukynsky poked in a lose puck in front of the net 28 seconds into the third period.
%^$Penalties were the name of the game in the contest. When the final horn sounded, Ohio State (11-9-2, 10-5-2 CCHA) had racked up a season-high 15 penalties for 38 minutes, while Lake State (4-13-3, 3-9-2 CCHA) was whistled for 17 totaling 34 minutes.
%^$Ohio State begins a three-game road trip on Tuesday, when they take on Miami of Ohio in Oxford. The Buckeyes return home on Thursday, January 21, to play Ferris State at 7 pm. Tickets are available by calling the OSU Ticket Office 292-2624 or 1-800-GOBUCKS.
