COLUMBUS, Ohio –The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (19-8 overall, 7-7 Big Ten) dropped a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-17) decision at 15th-ranked Michigan (21-5, 10-4) Saturday night in Cliff Keen Arena. OSU’s Katie Dull had a team-high 16.5 points in the match with 14 kills, two solo blocks and one assist block. Michigan’s Alex Hunt recorded a match-high 17 points with 17 kills.

Ohio State opened set one with an Allie Schwarzwalder solo block and a kill by Anna Szerszen to take a 2-0 lead. A kill by Hunt and one from Jennifer Cross tied the set at two. At three-all, a Cross kill and two OSU errors gave Michigan a 6-3 lead. The Wolverines built a five-point lead at 12-7. A Michigan error and a kill from Emily Danks made it 12-9. Trailing, 15-12, kills from Szerszen and Danks and a Dull solo block tied the set at 15. After ties at 16 and 18, kills from Claire McElheny and Hunt gave Michigan a 20-18 lead. Kills from Dull and McElheny made it 21-19. OSU tied the set at 21 with two kills from Szerszen. The Buckeyes took a 22-21 lead with a Kelli Barhorst solo block. Michigan tied the set at 22 with a kill from McElheny. Two OSU errors gave the Wolverines set point at 24-22. A Szerszen kill stopped the point at 24-23. Michigan won the set, 25-23 off an OSU error to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Wolverines hit .324 in the set to .188 for Ohio State.

Michigan, with a kill from Fletcher Courtney and a Sloane Donhoff ace serve, opened set two at 2-0. A Dull kill made it 2-1. A solo block by Lexi Zimmerman and a Cross-Zimmerman block gave Michigan a 4-1 lead. Two kills from Dull and a Danks-Barhorst block tied the set at four. A Hunt kill and two from Lexi Erwin gave the Wolverines a 7-4 lead. Trailing, 11-8, a Mariah Booth-Szerszen block and a Szerszen kill made it 11-10. Hunt, with a kill, made it 12-10. A Booth kill and a Wolverine error tied the set at 12. After four more ties, the set was 16-all. Two OSU errors, a Hunt kill and a Karlee Bruck-McElheny block opened a 20-16 Michigan lead. At 22-18, a Booth kill cut the lead to three at 22-19. A Zimmerman kill and an OSU error made it set point at 24-19. Dull stopped the point with a kill at 24-20. An OSU error ended the set at 25-20 to give Michigan a 2-0 lead in the match. The Wolverines hit .417 for the set to .235 for Ohio State.

Michigan opened set three with seven consecutive points and never trailed in the set. At 12-4, five consecutive Wolverine errors cut the lead to three at 12-9. Kills from Cross and Szerszen made it 13-10. Two kills from Erwin gave Michigan a 15-10 lead. The Wolverines held the lead to reach match point at 24-16 with a kill from Cross. A Dull kill stopped the match point at 24-17. Michigan won the set, 25-17, with an OSU error to win the match, 3-0. The Wolverines hit .241 in the set to .097 for Ohio State.

For the match, Michigan hit .322 to .175 for Ohio State. The Wolverines had a 45-35 kill advantage and a 43-32 margin in assists. Zimmerman posted a match-high 37 assists for Michigan while Betsy Hone had 28 for Ohio State. Each squad recorded two ace serves while Ohio State gave up seven service errors to five for Michigan. OSU’s Danks and Michigan’s Donhoff reach had two aces in the contest. Defensively, the Wolverines had a 39-22 margin in digs. Michigan’s Donhoff recorded a match-high 12 with Maggie Busch adding 10. OSU’s Hone posted a team-high six digs. The Buckeyes had a 10-4 advantage in team blocks with OSU’s Booth collecting a match-high four blocks with a solo and three assists.

The Buckeyes return home to host sixth-ranked Illinois and Wisconsin. OSU will host Illinois at 7 p.m. Friday and Wisconsin at 2 p.m. Sunday in matches at St. John Arena.
