Buckeyes Edge Quinnipiac, 3-2 for Non-Conference Sweep

COLUMBUS, Ohio. – The No. 5 Ohio State women’s ice hockey team completed the non-conference sweep against Quinnipiac Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 win. Two defensemen put the Buckeyes on top early and Rebecca Freiburger scored the game-winning goal early in the final frame. With the win, Ohio State improves to 16-6-4 (9-4-3 WCHA) and the Bobcats slip to 13-9-3 (5-6-2 ECAC).

Buckeye Bits

  • Andrea Braendli recorded 18 saves in her 50th career start for the Buckeyes. With the win, she improves to 13-5-4 on the season.
  • Junior forwards Tatum Skaggs and Liz Schepers each recorded their 100th career games.
  • Madison Bizal opened scoring with her fourth goal of the season.
  • Freshman Teghan Inglis scored her third career goal in the second period.
  • Rebecca Freiburger opened scoring in the third period with her third goal in the past five games. The goal was her second game-winning goal of the season.

First Period

Ohio State once again took the lead first against the Bobcats. In the 10th minute Madison Bizal fired off a shot from the top of the circle that sailed past Abbie Ives’ blocker. She was assisted by Emma Maltais and Lisa Bruno for her fourth goal of the season. With less than 30 seconds left in the period, Laura Lundblad scored the equalizer after forcing a turnover in the neutral zone. The Buckeyes outshot the Bobcats 15-8 in the first period.

Second Period

The game remained deadlocked at 1-all until freshman defender Teghan Inglis scored the go-ahead goal for the Buckeyes with just over six minutes left in the period. Rebecca Freiburger dished off the pass to Inglis who went bar down for her third career goal. The score held at 2-1 with Ohio State taking a 28-13 lead in shots after two periods.

Third Period

Rebecca Freiburger extended the Buckeye lead to 3-1 just 1:47 into the final frame. Her low-angle shot was assisted by Madison Bizal and Paetyn Levis. Midway through the period, Gabby Rosenthal was booked for roughing and Quinnipiac scored with the player advantage just 20 seconds later to narrow the Buckeye lead, 3-2. The Bobcats called Ives to the bench with less than two minutes to play but time ran down and the Buckeyes clinched the second win of the weekend to complete the sweep.
