BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Ohio State men’s basketball team picked up its third-straight victory, a 55-52 defeat of Indiana Sunday afternoon at Assembly Hall. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 16-7 on the year and 6-6 in the Big Ten, while the Hoosiers drop to 13-11, 4-9 in conference play.
Andre Wesson paced Ohio State with 15 points while Kaleb Wesson and C.J. Jackson each added 10. Romeo Langford led Indiana with 15 points while Devonte Green chipped in with 10.
Ohio State connected on five of its first six shots from the field to take an 11-2 lead at the 15:22 mark of the opening half. However, the Hoosiers scored the next seven to cut the Buckeye lead to 11-9 with 11:54 left to play. A 3-pointer from Duane Washington Jr. pushed the Ohio State advantage to 21-14 with 3:58 remaining but the Hoosiers closed the half on a 7-2 spurt to make it a 23-21 game at the break.
Ohio State held a 20-12 lead on the boards in the opening 20 minutes but the Hoosiers forced nine Buckeye turnovers in the first half. Kaleb Wesson led the Buckeyes with six points at the half while Langford paced Indiana with five.
After Indiana knotted the score at 23-23 on its opening possession of the second half, the Buckeyes scored the next seven, including a 3-pointer from Luther Muhammad to push the lead to 30-23 with 18:00 left to play. The Ohio State advantage increased to nine at 47-38 on an Andre Wesson 3-pointer with 6:27 remaining but the Hoosiers responded with three-straight 3-pointers, including a pair by Langford to even the score again at 47-47 with 4:54 left to play.
A 3-pointer from Green with 1:46 left to play gave the Hoosiers their first lead of the game at 52-49 but Jackson answered right back with a 3-pointer of his own with the shot clock running down to knot the score at 52-52 with 1:11 remaining. The Hoosiers’ next possession resulted in an Andre Wesson steal and Wesson followed with a dunk with 20 seconds remaining with give the Buckeyes a 54-52 lead. Langford’s 3-pointer caromed off the rim on the ensuing possession and Muhammad connected on the first of two free throws to give the Buckeyes the 55-52 victory.
Ohio State hosts Illinois at 7 p.m. Thursday.
