COLUMBUS, Ohio – Playing in its first conference game as a member of the ECAC Lacrosse League, the Ohio State men’s lacrosse lost to Fairfield, 10-8, Tuesday night in Fairfield, Conn. Buckeye freshman Logan Schuss had a hat trick and added an assist for a team-high four points, with senior James Green chipping in three points on two goals and a helper.

The Buckeyes (4-4, 0-1 ECAC) will remain on the road, playing a league game at Quinnipiac at noon.

Fairfield (4-2, 1-0 ECAC) scored the first two goals of the game, with Kevin Peters tallying at 5:48 and Brent Adams following 1:18 later. Buckeye junior Zach Rodgers scored man-up with 41 seconds left in the quarter to cut the lead in half.

Freshman Dan Wertz found Green for a goal to tie the game at 12:46 of the second but the Stags’ Nick Baglio responded 32 seconds later to regain the advantage. The teams traded goals in the final 4:56 to send Fairfield into halftime with a one-goal edge (4-3). Schuss scored for the Buckeyes off an assist from senior Mario Ventiquattro at 4:56, with Doug Kuring netting a goal at 2:06.

The teams combined for seven goals in the third quarter, giving Fairfield an 8-6 lead heading into the final stanza. Fairfield went ahead 5-3 on Ryan Mulford’s goal at 13:07, which Schuss answered, assisted by Green, at 11:23. The Stags then scored twice in 1:02, with a man-up goal from Matt Plominski at 8:19 and a score from Sam Snow at 7:17, to go ahead, 7-4. The Buckeyes then had back-to-back goals from Schuss and Ventiquattro, man-up assisted by Schuss, less than a minute apart at 3:21 and 2:32, to again cut the lead to one (7-6). A goal from Peters with four seconds left in the third quarter again put Fairfield ahead by two.

Fairfield scored at the 9:15 mark of the fourth quarter to take a three-goal lead for the first time in the game (9-6). Freshman Dominique Alexander scored for Ohio State at 7:34 and set up Green for a goal at 6:04 to once again make it a one-goal game. Marshall Johnson found the back of the cage with 3:49 left to put Fairfield up 10-8. Ohio State had chances late, but could get no closer and dropped the conference contest.

Buckeye senior Brandon Freeman started and played the first 50:45 in the cage, allowing nine goals and suffering the loss while making 14 saves to match his season high. Freshman Ryan Brant played the final 9:15 and allowed one goal. Fairfield goalie Joseph Marra had 10 saves in all 60 minutes.

Schuss now has a team-best 11 assists and 24 points, ranking second with 13 goals. Green has a team-best 14 tallies and is tied with Ventiquattro for second in points with 16 each. Schuss and Green both have at least one point in each game this season.
