DAYTON, Ohio – It was a tough finish to the non-conference schedule for the Ohio State women’s volleyball team (9-3) as it dropped a pair of matches at the Flyer Invitational on Saturday. The Buckeyes were bested by Tennessee in four sets (25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16) and lost a five-set heartbreaker to Dayton (18-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-15, 16-14) in the nightcap.
When the Buckeyes faced the Lady Vols, Vanja Bukilić and Lauren Witte tallied 14 kills apiece while Mia Grunze put away 13 kills. Becca Mauer tallied a team-high 26 assists and Olivia Dailey dished 19 helpers. Ohio State hung with Tennessee throughout the first three sets but could not keep up in the fourth.
Bukilić was responsible for a career-high 18 kills against Dayton and Dailey finished with a double-double (37 assists, 11 digs). Grunze and Witte notched 10 and eight kills, respectively, while Hannah Gruensfelder earned a match-best 18 digs. Jordan Fry was a force at the net on a career-high nine blocks. After forcing a deciding set, the Flyers edged out the Buckeyes late in the rally, 16-14.
Gruensfelder and Bukilić represented the Scarlet & Gray on the all-tournament team.
Ohio State opens Big Ten play in a midweek matchup at Wisconsin on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
