COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (20-10 overall, 8-9 Big Ten) lost a 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-21) decision at seventh-ranked Penn State (24-4, 14-3) Wednesday night in Rec Hall. OSU’s Katie Dull scored a team-high 7.5 points with seven kills and one assist block while Penn State’s Blair Brown collected a match-high 21.5 points with a match-high 19 kills, one ace serve and three assist blocks.
Penn State opened the first set with a kill from Deja McClendon. A Mariah Booth kill tied the set at one. Ohio State took a 2-1 lead with a Nittany Lion error. Blair Brown, with a kill, tied the set at two. Kills from Ariel Scott and Brown and two ace serves from McClendon gave Penn State a 6-2 lead. Penn State held the lead reaching set point at 24-16 on a Fatima Balza-McClendon block. A McClendon kill ended the set at 25-16 to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead in the match. Penn State hit .276 for the set to .029 for Ohio State.
Trailing 0-1 off a Brown kill, Ohio State’s Danks tied the second set at one with a kill. Kills from Balza and Brown made it 3-1 Nittany Lions. A Penn State error made it 3-2. Kills from Brown and Dull made it 4-3. Penn State took a 7-3 lead with a Brown kill, an OSU error and a Cathy Quilico ace serve. The Nittany Lions held the lead reaching set point at 24-14 with an Arielle Wilson-Scott block. An ace serve by Brown ended the set at 25-14 to give Penn State a 2-0 lead in the match. The Nittany Lions hit .464 in the set to .217 for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State, with an Amanda Peterson kill, opened set three. A Balza kill tied the set at one. A Brown kill and back-to-back blocks by Balza and Brown gave Penn State a 4-1 lead. Trailing, 7-5, a kill from Dull and a Penn State error allowed Ohio State to tie the set at seven. OSU took an 8-7 lead with a kill from Kelli Barhorst. An OSU error tied the set at eight. At 12-all, an OSU error and a Katie Kabbes kill opened a 14-12 Nittany Lion lead. Ohio State trailed, 22-19, when an Anna Szerszen kill and an Allie Schwarzwalder-Dull block cut the Nittany Lion lead to one at 22-21. Kills from Brown and Kristin Carpenter made it match point at 24-21. Penn State won the set, 25-21, off an OSU error to win the match, 3-0. The Nittany Lions hit .333 for the set to .222 for Ohio State.
For the match, Penn State hit .356 to .149 for Ohio State. The Nittany Lions had a 46-28 advantage in kills and a 46-25 margin in assists. PSU’s Carpenter recorded a match-high 39 assists while Betsy Hone and Peterson had nine assists each for the Buckeyes. The Nittany Lions had a 6-0 margin in ace serves with Alyssa D’Errico recording a match-high two. Each squad gave up eight service errors. Defensively, Penn State had a 48-28 advantage in digs. D’Errico posted a match-high 15 digs for the Nittany Lions. OSU’s Dull recorded nine. At the net, Penn State posted an 8-7 margin in team blocks. Balza recorded a match-high six blocks with a solo and five assists. OSU’s Booth posted a team-high four assist blocks.
Ohio State returns to St. John Arena at 7 p.m. Saturday to face 25th-ranked Northwestern (18-9, 8-8).
