Buckeyes Downed by Johns Hopkins, 17-8

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 17 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team dropped a 17-8 decision to No. 7 Johns Hopkins Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field in Baltimore, Md. The Buckeyes are now 1-3 in Big Ten Conference play while the Blue Jays improve to a league-best 3-1.

The Short Story
After a 98-minute weather delay, Ohio State and Johns Hopkins finally faced off from Homewood Field at 3:38.

The Buckeyes took an early two-goal lead, scoring twice in the opening 5:05 of the game. Fifth-year senior Jack Myers scored at 10:47 unassisted. Freshman Blake Eiland added the second at 9:55. The Blue Jays neutralized the Buckeyes’ lead, scoring three goals in under a minute to a 3-2 advantage over Ohio State with under six minutes left to play in the first quarter.

Ed Shean tied the game at 3-3 with 4:32 to play in the first to end the Blue Jays’ run but Johns Hopkins who took a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Johns Hopkins pieced together another three-goal run, but it was Shean again who put a stop to it, scoring at 11:53 in the second quarter to make the score 6-4 in favor of the home team. After another two-goal punch from Johns Hopkins in the second, the Buckeyes responded with a pair of goals from Kyle Borda (7:53) and Myers (6:49). Colby Smith was the fifth Buckeye to get on the board, scoring at 4:25 in the second, but Ohio State still trailed 10-7 at the half.

Johns Hopkins held the Buckeyes scoreless in the third quarter to extend their lead to 17-10 with 15:00 to play. Myers tallied the only goal of the fourth quarter as the Blue Jays took the 17-8 win over Ohio State.

Skylar Wahlund tallied 11 saves on the day. The Buckeyes caused five turnovers and were successful on 25 of 26 clears against Johns Hopkins.

Game Notes

• Jack Myers led the Buckeyes with four points and three goals on the day. He recorded the team’s first short handed goal of the day on his second goal of the game.
• Myers is now tied with Joel Dalgarno (’06-09) for fourth in the Ohio State record book with 227 career points.
• Ed Shean continued his point streak to every game this season, adding three for Ohio State on two goals and an assist against Johns Hopkins.
• Blake Eiland tallied just his third goal of the year and first since the Rutgers game (March 26) to give Ohio State its 2-0 lead in the first quarter.
• Kyle Borda extends his goal scoring streak to six games with a goal in Saturday’s game. He has scored 12 goals in the last six contests for Ohio State.
• Freshman Coleman Kraske took the majority of Ohio State’s faceoffs in just his second game seeing action. He finished 6-of-19.
• Freshman Johnny Cool led the team with a career-high four ground balls on the day.
